Was looking to see how much my favorite data recovery program was going for these days and saw that they now released a home version for free. I downloaded it started a virtual machine to see what settings it wrote on a clean install and found out I wasted my time. Within the installer itself, it contains an option to install a portable version of it on your USB! It's a great software and I highly recommend it to anyone needing to recover anything. Only downside is it works with fat family and not ntfs.

It's a free R-UNDELETE version for Home Users. It recovers files from external USB disks, digital photo and video camera memory cards and other devices with the FAT (FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, and exFAT) file system. In additional, it also uses the scan for known file types, which makes R-Undelete Home is an ideal solution for recovery lost digital photos, movies, and music.

Seriously, do you guys test an application for portability before voting it in into TPFC database?

The installer writes to the registry @

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\R-tt\R-Undelete\00000010
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\R-tt\R-Undelete

The application requires admin rights to run

Settings saved to settings.ini in \user\current\AppData\Roaming\R-TT\R-Studio

Log file saved to \Documents\R-TT\R-Studio folder

Also writes to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\R-tt\R-Undelete if the key was deleted after "portable" installation.

It may work if run from a flash drive, have not tried yet.

At least it doesn't install a driver

• Yet again, that's to be expected from any application that needs direct access to the hardware, such as undeleters and disk management utilities...
  
  Now, those registry keys make this look rather bad for the "stealth" crowd here on TPFC.
  
  I assumed it was kosher since it had been submitted by Checker and no one had posted any significant details all the while it has been in the database, but you're right, I should have tested it.

I tend to agree. R-Undelete should be loudly marked as crippleware only worth for legacy filesystems...
