0.4.17.1 was released June 2018 and 0.5.00 Release Candidate 2 was recently announced, hopefully a new final will be up soon.

0.4.16 and now 0.4.17.1 have been far more stable than previous releases on my system. The backup for my 0.4.16 is 863MB and still plays quite well but does crash more often than I like. I've been wondering what the torch limit is defaulted to because I have to have at least 8-10k maybe more like 20k in several huge caverns/voids.

It's not as neat as the animated torches, but I replaced default torches with Calinou's "lag-free" Carbon Torches
they look similar to old Minecraft torches but without any animation or particle effects.
It's an older mod so you may have to edit it a bit :)

5.0.1 was released March 31, 2019.

I downloaded 5.0.0 a couple weeks ago and it hasn't crashed yet so stability looks a lot better. I'm gonna try copying the saved world/game to the newer update to see if there is any issue.

Looking back through the thread, it looks like an Internet connection was required. Can anyone confirm if that's still the case?

I unplugged my network cable and started the game. It does ask for access to the network but the game started before I even clicked on anything. I am running in single player mode.

Since you can join a networked game or host a server, I'd expect this behavior.

Wouldn't I?

The issue is that I generally avoid programs that absolutely insist on an Internet connection. The main concern is that in a few years if development falls off and the program becomes vulnerable to attacks, requiring an internet connection basically makes the program unusable. After all, even ancient web browsers can still do useful things in an offline mode.

So no, it doesn't matter that the program tries to connect, it's refusing to start without one.
