Jaangle (multimedia manager)

#1 Post by Midas »

Since it seems the choice for portable digital music managers is limited to Foobar (kinda tough to setup), behemoths like Songbird and MediaMonkey, and a couple of DotNET programs (MusicBee e.g), I think resubmitting Jaangle (AKA Teen Spirit) is in order; it is based on the Bass and Taglib audio and metadata libraries, and it integrates well with Last.fm and other online resources, from where it is able to gather data, too.

Jaangle has been discussed previously here at TPFC (see viewtopic.php?t=287 and viewtopic.php?t=5028), but it seems that then it wasn't really portable, which it is now -- my results testing it have been more than satisfactory. Development seems to have stalled after publishing of the GPL code on Sourceforge and release of v0.98i in April last year; the program's site, wiki and forum look somewhat abandoned; not withstanding, Jaangle remains in decent working order.

It categorizes your mp3, ogg, wma, avi etc collection and displays it in easy to browse, user interface. It has a quality audio/video player and also an integrated tag editor.

BTW, portability is achieved by creating a 'UserRootOverride.txt' file in program folder with a single '\' (backslash) inside...

Jaangle was considered top choice in its category at Gizmo's freeware:

Softpedia's review awarded 4 stars:

Tested this out today. Nothing about this program really grabbed me as especially striking or unique among music players, apart from the available History and Advanced Search features. I did like that the text easily scales larger or smaller from the top-right corner button.

Few other notes on this version:
  • Right when I started the program, it prompted me with

"Options - Confirmation - Online Service (beta) [checkbox]"

Needs a little explanation here. What online service? When you click the help button it has no idea what you're talking about.
  • Most of the skins were either gray or REALLY striking (reminding me of Windows' "High Contrast" mode) -- would like to see that cut down to maybe a few choice looks and then have the rest as available downloads.
  • Took up 28 megs of RAM
---

EDIT: Former name was "Teen Spirit". Here's our thread on that program: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=287

I also like my (audio) players lean and mean, but Jaangle appealed to me more as a manager program -- after downloading, extracting and setting up, I was organizing my audio files in no time. It does ID3 tag editing, it goes online to auto-magically download music info and cover art with impressive accuracy and it scrobbles your listening to Last.fm. It is far from perfect, but I think it is a worthy offer for such work.

Not really sure on this, but I think it is just bad wording for asking permission to go online, since the (partially non-working) link to the Jaangle wiki is meant to replace the absent help file...

I agree, most of the proposed skins are just plain fuggly and there isn't anything to write home about the rest of the program's UI. I settled on the last skin in the list, one called 'XP'. Not everything is lost, though, if you want you can easily roll your own with the aptly named Jaangle Skinner (DotNET): http://forum.artificialspirit.com/viewtopic.php?t=804

Doesn't seem excessive for an Internet connected program -- my Pale Moon x64 is gobbling a stunning 800+ MB at this exact moment...

I have just tested the latest version of Jaangle (0.98i Build 997) and the portable version seems to be natively portable- it automatically created 'Settings.ini' and 'UserRootOverride.txt' inside its own folder and I didn't find any Jaangle entries anywhere else. Most probably abandoned but Jaangle still runs fine on Windows 8.1. However the 'To Do' list seems impressive- http://www.jaangle.com/todo_list.

Awesome Audio/Video player. Highly recommended.
Looks like a lot of time and love went into this program.
It's cleverly organized and everything fits tightly in a well designed interface.
My player of choice for a few years already...

One thing i've just noticed right now : Jaangle portable writes some AVS (visualization plugin for Winamp) config info to the "WIN.INI" file (at least under XP).
