Whereas the portable version of Amarok is barely usable at this time (moreover, the 2.x series is a little bloated for my taste), Clementine is a very good option for those who want to test a feature-rich player of that style.

Great news -- I made an unsuccessful attempt with Amarok a while back so very happy to see this.

Unfortunately, as you move your drive from PC to PC, your library is reset since the path isn't adjusted in Clementine's database, rendering the app's library functionality a bit useless.

The Clementine Portable package that's been in test since last year at PortableApps.com does portablize the path but hasn't been released due to earlier Clementine bugs (like its infamous TCP/IP leak on Windows that would use up all your connections until nothing else could connect to the internet). As Clementine 1.1 seems stable, we can likely push this release out in our next string of new apps.

Very interesting program: seems to touch every area of music players well, without doing any of them exceptionally well. It looks good, has broad format support, plays everything you'd expect, and is clearly put together well.

• It's not as fast/light as Foobar
• Not as pretty/cross-platform as Songbird
• Not as familiar/extensible as Winamp and its knockoffs (like AIMP).

Where it excels is someplace completely new to me: WIDE suport for all sorts of different online music services including Spotify, Soundcloud, even Google Drive. Additionally, the search tool on top of this is extremely powerful, helping find an amazing amount of media resources. Songbird seemed to be trying to do something along these lines but that involved signing into Facebook or something (I lost interest when it looked like they were pushing for Facebook integration).

Other Features

• Devices support - like Songbird, supports quite a few, although I wasn't able to test this in detail
• View your own drive by the built-in filesystem. I know most people prefer the song/artist scanning, but this capability is my favorite part of Foobar
• The "mood" bars -- I don't even know how to quite explain them -- give a quick wave form look at the overall file. This can give a vague idea of how the song sounds based on jumps, drops, volume changes, etc.
• Great Tag editor, including a fingerprinting system to try and guess the song tags
• Transcode to all the major formats (and Speex -- was surprised to see that).
• Wide playlist support - covers every playlist format I knew about and some I didn't
• Equalizer happily had some built-in presets (find those much easier to use).

Wishlist

• Ability to disable mood bars -- it's cool, but not something I want my computer to spend time calculating. Can't seem to turn it off even after unchecking the box for that. [update: fixed]
• Better drag-and-drop support (couldn't drag things into the library window)
• Would like to see radio recording options, especially given that you could record Internet radio directly to your device of choice. That would be stellar.
• (This is a very minor ask) Default visualizations for slower machines that you can boost - I don't have a graphics card, but I know most visualizations don't require them.
• Enable a higher priority - no processor priority editor to try and maintain music playback rate when other programs get greedy
• Opus support [update: added]

I use Songbird in my Android device and am very satisfied with it for that purpose; but I feel exactly the same way, not really happy with pervasive Facebook integration -- so I stopped updating after v1.6.2.394...

Be careful when using the embedded web browser for lookups and other integration bits as it would now be vulnerable, just like an old copy of Firefox would. Granted, if you don't use any of those features, it's a bit of a non-issue. Just a heads-up for folks who may be unaware.

Just tested Clementine official portable package version 1.2-48-gcee800c: http://builds.clementine-player.org/win32/release/

Saves Trolltech junk in registry.
Saves network cache in the drive's root.
Saves relative paths for the library!

Portable enough for me.

I'm assuming that portable package to be of Clementine latest version, joby_toss; the official release is currently v1.2.1 -- changelog at http://code.google.com/p/clementine-pla ... /Changelog...

EDIT: I just tested and found that it's in fact a special build of Clementine v1.2.0; nevertheless, I was able to (mostly) update it by copying to the corresponding location all the files (Uni)Extracted from the latest 'ClementineSetup-1.2.1-83-gd04b4a6.exe' build (http://builds.clementine-player.org/win ... 04b4a6.exe), with the exception of the 'clementine.exe' itself(!) and still retain portability -- aptly named Trolltech junk still shows up at 'HKCU\Software\Trolltech', but all Clementine's configuration files get written to its 'data' sub-folder...

Clementine had serious issues in the earlier 2012 versions with Windows 7 . It crashed frequently when I tried to play a song and so I quit it.
The new version is working well so far. . I use the program files extracted from sandbox to run the application and it works well apart from writing entries in HKLM and Trolltech and a folder in C:/Users/{USERNAME}/.config .

Current Clementine version is v1.2.2 -- there are a few prior builds that could be portable (untested!) at http://builds.clementine-player.org/win32/release/.

Tested with yaP (config provided by avi-aram -- see http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 633#p68633 -- updated to yaP v0.6 at http://pastebin.com/RX5YdxZa), everything seems to work alright, with the exception of relative paths in the library database.

Note: from reading the rather sparse documentation available, there's a possible workaround for this library issue, it being for you to create a m3u playlist with relative paths from your files and then have Clementine play it...

Winpenpack put together its own portable X-Clementine, but despite a few forum alerts it remains at v1.1.1...

After getting Clementine working *beautifully* on a Mac I use, I decided to give it another try on PC. Very pleased I did.

As midas pointed out, there was a "portable" series is showing up in the releases section: http://builds.clementine-player.org/win32/release/

Status: Portable. Writes settings to \data. Stealth status untested just because I accidentally ran the program outside of my test structure. As this program uses the Qt toolkit, it's assumed standard "trolltech" registry entries will be present.

You'll find a relative path in both the program interface and clementine.db ... Clementine.ini will still show up as a hard link "last path".

Embedded browser issue:

I can't seem to find an embedded browser component. Qt libraries are listed as 4.8.3, while Wikipedia lists the latest version as 5.4.1 so I dunno.

Because the last homepage announcement is from last October, I just wanted to say that the current Clementine version is v1.2.3-1156-g030b7e3 (released 2015-05-22, changelog at http://raw.githubusercontent.com/clemen ... /Changelog).

Very happy with it. Contradicting what I've written before, natively portable releases can now be downloaded from the Windows releases repository (http://builds.clementine-player.org/win32/release/) -- at least judging from the most recent version, which I tested with 64-bit Primo under Windows 7 x64 SP1, failing to find any significant system traces outside of the 'data' folder located inside portable Clementine's own.

@Nh: two whole different beasts, Clementine's is more of a cloud client of sorts cum media manager...

EDIT: a warning I just noticed says "iPods and USB devices currently don't work on Windows. Sorry!" (Devices sidebar).
