Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

The program writes settings to the application folder.

Can this software be considered portable?
NOTE:
With this procedure it runs with no problems on Vista 64, but on XP 32 I had to run it in mode "Windows 2000 compatibility".

When you encounter softwares like this one, you don't need to move the files from {sys} subfolder in your System32 folder. You just move them into the {app} subfolder, where the .exe is.
I did not have to run RegLib.bat to make this one work. It also accesses/modifies some registry keys, unimportant. Portable enough for me.

I retested this one ("portable_listen_n_write_free_1.4.0.0.exe") and it seems to have the need to copy the (provided) file "richtx32.ocx" in "system32" (or "syswow64") folder (I didn't have this file prior to the application start), and leaves it behind.
Can anyone confirm?

You're right, joby_toss. It copies the ocx file to "system32" or "syswow64" and leaves it behind. Which reminds me what JohnTHaller said in this post... Calendar Magic depends on a lot of ocx files, but I didn't identify which functions requires them.
In conclusion, portables but not stealth and need administrator rights.
It's a pity. In my days of university student I spent hours and hours fighting against dozen of cassettes, transcribing the classes manually. This app would be very helpful for students that don't have a computer of their own...
I don't think anything has changed much from the PFW point of view

Please consider taking the time to write to the Software Author/s with a detailed feature request for portability.
If we all PILE ON they might seriously consider a request for portability.
EG:Feature requests;
1.) Option to use comctl32.ocx, richtx32.ocx, CMCTLIT.dll and RCHTXIT.dll from the application folder when running portably. Not from C:\Windows\System32, or "syswow64" folders.
2.) Option to Not Write to Registry but instead to the application folder when running portably. (Example of an unwanted registry edit: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID)
Having seen a mention of your software 'Listen N Write' at the TPFC forum (http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/), and having a friend who would very much benefit from using this kind of freeware, I decided to submit a feature request for it to be made fully portable in an upcoming version.
The importance of 'portable' software can't be stressed enough nowadays, since most students like him have to work on totally locked down faculty computers, who don't allow for software installation or privilege elevation.
The capability to use comctl32.ocx, richtx32.ocx, CMCTLIT.dll and RCHTXIT.dll from the application folder when running portably, and not from C:\Windows\System32, or "syswow64" folders should be provided.
The possibility of not needing write access to the system registry should also be given, allowing instead to store settings in the application folder, at least when running portably (an example of an unwanted lingering registry entry is HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID; it should be deleted on program close).
Thanks for your attention and your generosity in giving away this software.
A program of a very specific kind about which I've had many requests in the past; composed by an audio player and a simple text editor, capable of outputing plain text and rtf files; it has also recording capabilities. In my rushed testing, the portable version saved it settings in a Listen N Write.ini file in the Files subfolder.
