PeerGuardian 2

#1 Post by Hank7 »

PeerGuardian 2

Description:
PeerGuardian 2 is Phoenix Labs’ premier IP blocker for Windows. PeerGuardian 2 integrates support for multiple lists, list editing, automatic updates, and blocking all of IPv4 (TCP, UDP, ICMP, etc), making it the safest and easiest way to protect your privacy on P2P.
Platform Support:
PeerGuardian 2 supports Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, and 2003, in 32-bit and 64-bit.

Note: PeerGuardian 2 does not support Windows Vista at the moment. This is a top priority, and we hope to have a Vista download soon.
... and they have it for OS X, too.

Portability:

Settings and lists are stored in the application folder.

You can also use local lists, and I noticed that PG2 uses a relative path if the list is stored at the same drive.

License: Open Source

Get it here: http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ (Use Universal Extractor)

(There is also PeerGuardian Lite, which I haven't checked out yet. It is a derivative of PeerGuardian 2 made to consume as little CPU/RAM as possible. It has no UI or options and consists of a single tray icon.)

Heh, yeah, I've been using this portably for years now, just never got around to adding it. About PeerGuardian Lite: I wouldn't recommend it since you don't have too much control over what does and does not get blocked, so you have to keep toggling it on and off if you have a problem. At least, that's my understanding from the description. I know that PeerGuardian does not like Valve's Steam or Neverwinter Nights and there's probably plenty more that will conflict with it. With normal PG, you can simply add exceptions, but I don't think PGLite allows this.

Though Steam is a terrific idea and was implemented somewhat well, it fell far short of all my expectations for it. Did they ever get the Friends network back up and running again? I stopped hoping for it after 2 years. Playing chess with myself was fun though. Stalemates are a pain in the butt.

i felt Steam sucked from the start, i used to play TFC all the time, and with steam shots just lagged out WAY too much,
(im on dialup, and no, i cant do anything about it, >.<)

but when a guy runs at me and i put three sniper shots in his chest, ..and he laughed and i went and cryed in a___err i mean, and it doesnt have any effect, i gave up on Steam and stopped playing,
(happened more then just once, :P)

sooo, to answer your question,
i have No idea, (and dont care, ;))

Steam is why i dont have HL2,

Hi, was wondering if you could run peerguardian without admin rights? I am on a computer that I do have access to this so I am forced to use portable programs like utorrent to download, but I would like this peerguardian protection. Also, is there another alternative to peerguardian that would allow me to do this? Thanks.

What's new in PeerGuardian (but not done yet)

The new PeerGuardian isn't done yet, but here are parts which are (mostly) finished!
List Manager
Adding a list
Quick List
Adding to the Quick List

Hold it! It's just getting better... this is very hilarious!!
(I don't think this page works with Internet Explorer 6. Oh well.)
It doesn't look so good on IE7

I'm really hope there will be a Vista support (I'm sure there will be...)

Most definately ;) That seems to be the big "hit" for this release, Vista support ;)

@hxh103

An alternative might be IPFilterdat.

Just remember that the filter should be placed where the uTorrent executable exist. and the filter must be named ipfilter.dat

Here's another filter set (may be more up to date): http://www2.openmedia.info:8080/p27.htm

PeerGuardian 6C and HotKeyz 2.7.4.0

HotKeyz 2.7.4.0
http://www.skynergy.com/hotkeyz.html

Ours: 2.7
http://portablefreeware.com/?id=254

---

UPDATE: Do not recommend upgrading to the 6C -- program is just crashing everytime. Going to switch back to earlier version. Its still up on the page as "PG2 6b (nt)".

My bad.

As far as the 2,1 and 2,2 etc....

...Wikipedia to the rescue!

Code: Select all

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PeerGuardian
I would guess that the second digit corresponds to the block list version.

HotKeyz 2.7.7 is out
http://www.skynergy.com/hotkeyz.html

Chagelog:
http://www.softpedia.com/progChangelog/ ... -6870.html

Yes it does work with relative pathways (e.g. "..\netscan\netscan.exe").

You will need at least the Sept '09 (as of this writing) Innounp.exe file for Universal Extractor: http://sourceforge.net/projects/innounp/files/
