A number of Font Utilities - some better than others ...

1. AMP Font Viewer 3.70
http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/FontViewer.php

This program is an easy to use font manager, which provides a quick overview of both installed and non installed fonts. It can install and uninstall fonts, and organize them in categories.

--------------------------------------------------------
2. FontsView32 V 2.1.0.7
http://www.blueorbsoft.com/fontsview32/index.html

It simply reads in all the supported screen or printer fonts ( ie installed fonts only) and displays them onscreen using normal, bold, italic, and bold/italic styles, as well as font sizes and colors. If you have multiple printers installed, you can select which printer to get the supported fonts from. You can also print the fonts to have a hard copy for easier access while trying to decide which font to use. The print preview screen also has the option to save the printout to a PDF or HTML file.

-----------------------------------------------------------
3. Unicode Font Viewer for Windows
http://www.soft-gems.net/FontViewer.php

This small tool shows all installed true type fonts on a Windows system and allows browsing through all codepoints (characters).

See whether your fonts contain chinese, arabic or hebrew characters. Get a short description of the selected character (where specified by the Unicode consortium) and compose a unicode string which can be copied to the clipboard and used in other applications. This way you can use the viewer as simple IME (input method editor) replacement.

7. Horizon5_FontViewer

FontRenamer renames truetype font files to the real name of the typefaces.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. Protaxis BestFonts v 1.1
http://www.protaxis.com/products/bestfonts.html

Utility to preview installed fonts, organize fonts in font groups, send font files on e-mail, pack fonts in zip archive.
No Registry activity spotted.
---------------------------------------------------------
10. PI-Font
via http://www.softpile.com/Desktop/Fonts/R ... index.html

PI-Font was designed to enable you to print a concise report of every font installed on your PC along with a sample alphabet in upper and lower case to give you an indication of what it looks like, or a verbose report which again shows you a sample upper and lower case alphabet along with a body of "lorem ipsum" text to give you a better idea what it would look like in a document.

Printing a full catalog of fonts, 1 font per page can result in hundreds of pages geing printed. Fortunately PI-Font has a unique feature enabling you to print either 1, 2 or 4 pages per printed page, resulting in a catalogue that can take up to a quarter of the amount of paper.

11. dp4 Font Viewer V 1.7
http://us.fontviewer.de/

Features:
displays all TrueType fonts in any folder
has its own TrueType render engine with 256 subpixel anti-alias
filters for font type / class / width / weight
choose between ASCII or glyph display, it is possible to enter your own text
shows unicodes and keys
simple management functions - install, delete, display font information
print function for single font and for complete font list
Stated not to require installation.
There seemed to be some trivial(?) Registry changes.
--------------------------------------------------------
12. FontHit Font Tools v 0.2.5
via ... http://www.download.com/FontHit-Font-To ... 69672.html

A manager that allows you view, preview, install, uninstall, print in color, customize size and text of the previews, browse your hard drive for fonts, create your own folders that you can drag fonts into, convenient and automatic categorization, drag-n-drop to add font files (even folders and zip files with fonts) to the preview list, and character map. You can also search the Web for fonts and font-related Web pages.

This version supports drag-'n-drop viewing of fonts within .ZIP files.

Registry changes seem trivial. Extract by Install/Uninstall
--------------------------------------------------------
13. FontPage
http://bluefive.pair.com/fontpage.htm

FontPage lets you examine and compare all of the fonts on your system.
You can view any typeface in bold, italic, underline and also 3D. In addition, you can also compare two selected fonts and preview fonts that are not yet installed on your system. FontPage can also print a sample page for selected fonts or print a list of all installed fonts.

There are some Registry changes - I cannot judge whether they are significant.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14. FastFontPreview v 1.1.5
http://www.lanmisoft.com/fastfontpreview.htm

Previews both uninstalled or installed fonts by folder from drives,CD's or DVD's, and quick one - click font installing. Fast font preview supports management with True Type and Open Type fonts with (*.ttf ) extension, which are recently used font types.Raster,Vector and PostScript Type1 (Adobe) fonts, FastFontPreview shows only if they are installed.
There is some Registry activity - (needs more judgement) : probably install/uninstall to extract
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15. BlaizEnterprises_Font Viewer v 2.00.382 (14 Jun 2006)
http://blaizfree.net/FVIEWER.HTM

Font Viewer to examine installed fonts. Many options. Emphasis of the 'look' of the program.
Stated to be "no installation ".
When I ran this program Windows Firewall took some exception and I blocked Internet access. The only Registry activity revolved around this. However, I note that you describe some issues with Blaiz products in the 'news' section. So this is PROBABLY a NoNo.

--------------------------------------------------------
If others explore what other font utilities are available they could note that ...
a> Font Selector (1.3)
b> X-Fonter 4.6
both make substantial changes to the Registry.

The Font Thing by Sue Fisher. An oldie but still the best.
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html

Writes some registry entries. Use the following reg script afterwards to clean up:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.TFT]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TheFontThing.Collection]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Fisher]

Thank you for providing the information I needed.
Of all the list of programs to manage the file names fonts, currently I use dp4 Font Viewer.

Anyone know of a way to use a font temporarily without first installing it, on Windows 8? In XP it was as simple as opening the font for preview, which made it available to any open app while open, but they removed this neat feature in W8.

@ Specular: Try FontsPortable ( http://www.mediafire.com/?1bzegbznzw6 )

- Place your fonts at: FontsPortable -> Data -> fonts
- Launch FontsPortable.exe

Active PortableFont is represented by an "F" next to the clock.

Thanks for the suggestion, is there a reason it's on MediaFire though? Is there an official page for it somewhere?
