DjVuToy [DjVu file manager]

#1 Post by I am Baas »

DjVuToy is a handy toolkit to merge, split and analyze DjVu files.

Wow -- If you use DjVu files or want to start, this is extremely valuable. Its slim, light, seems very capable of running under WINE, and packed with features.
  • Included editor: rearranges pages, rotation and batch rotation, as well as insertion (from file or a blank page).
  • Supports drag and drop of file names/paths
  • Temp folder appears to be the local folder, but you can change it to the system temp (or any other) and choose 'always use this folder'.
  • Compression: DJVU file creation has a variety of settings and even the ability to save photos, color text, or regular documents. In basic tests, this seemed to work really well and is definitely a very strong feature PDF creators are missing.
  • Imports PDG, BMP, GIF, PNG, TIFF, JPG, and JK2
  • Exports to TIFF, PNG, JPG, or BMP, with available functions for black and white, pallate (I'm assuming he means photo quality) and gray/color pages.
  • Speed: Conversion from several JPG images took about 15 seconds for a 2.15 meg file.
Unclear points (mostly because the developer's first language isn't English):
  • The "Hidden Text" tab references OCR but I think this is a mistranslation and just means export to text, xml, and even the ability to import and remove text.
  • You can modify the DPI, although that didn't seem to affect compression, so I was a little confused there.
  • Not sure what the Annotiation or File Info tabs do.
  • Not really sure if the lossless compression worked because it was the same file size from a TIFF file when I used Lossless and Normal compression settings. That may have been a result of the input file being JPGs, I don't know.
Anyway, I've been working with PDFs a LOT lately and been really annoyed by the PDF spec for compressing images (it frequently re-compresses already compressed JPGs and makes them look like crap), so I'm intrigued by how DjVu seems to handle them.

I still haven't been able to convert my work over to DjVu even with great programs like this. There's just too many tools that want to talk to the PDF format. Sigh.

One update: the author has edited the "Hidden Text" bit I mentioned in my previous post, adding "OCR" specifically, and this has been integrated into other conversion tools. Unfortunately it has a dependency: "OCR is based on MS Office 2003/2007's Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI)."

Thanks Baas.

Edit: the OCR bit didn't change over versions, that was my mistake/confusion.

DjVuToy now at v2.08 (2016) afaik (got it from a French site) and yes the MODI ocr process works with it very nicely - when I created the djvu file I selected lossless for compression.
If you don't have MODI in an MS Office 2007 installation, install MODI by installing it from MS's SharePoint Designer 2007 (32 bit)
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... n&id=21581

Instructions for installing the component:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/982760

Once installed you just run DjVuToy as per usual enabling the OCR option.

I found the text layer-under-image it produced vastly superior to the 90% junk that so far I've found tesseract manages, although that may be due to the helper /gui apps which all seem to be (paused) early developmental. CuneiForm produces acceptable ocr for text layer and CuneiDjVu is quite good when it runs.
A nice touch would be introduction in DjVuToy of the option of selecting ocr engines (MODI/tesseract/cuneiform/other) in case MODI is withdrawn.

Very interesting. OCR is something that's been missing from the DJVU format and no doubt hurting adoption. Good to know.

DjVuToy was hard to find!
http://www.comicer.com/ no longer exists.
However DjVuToy is listed at: https://biblioteka.locloud.pl/items/show/1
Direct download link: https://biblioteka.locloud.pl/files/ori ... b6fb97.zip
Version: DjVuToy v.2.03 beta8 Unicode Edition (that is all I could find). Apparently there were more recent versions.
VirusTotal: 0-68
Seems portable

From the posts in this thread, it seems that some people at TPFC have more recent versions. Is there a way to post the application (archive.org, etc.).

Now I have to figure out how to get "MODI" ( viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16880&p=83103&hilit ... gui#p83103 )
Any idea?

For ease of reference the DjVu developer's download directory for the application and other programs is:

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/f0z2hexqdnr9a/Software

(from the About tab in the program's v.3.06 Unicode edition (2021) which I just downloaded).

You'll see the mediafire directory also includes a subdirectory entitled MODI containing setup instructions etc for the OCR component from MS.

On DjVu format and generally on a digitisation universe of things much can be learnt by refernce to:
