Atlantis Word Processor [not portable]

#1 Post by Andre »

Just checked the database here and Altantis WP comes up as non-portable. However it does look like it can be run from a USB stick by following the instructions outlined here:

http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en ... .php?t=663

General Info:
http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en/
http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en/features.htm

I'll test it later today with regshot.

Andre

PS: Maybe one day I really will find a portable app - a real one! :) Heck of a lot of "almost portbale" apps out there that claim to be the real deal.

Cool. 8)

Atlantis is feels like a portable and lightweight Winword 95 or 2000 (anybody remember those?). Initially, I was afraid it would only be portable on the USB drive, but verified that wasn't correct.

The installation is somewhat convoluted, you have to run setup and either point it to the flash drive straight away or you have to install it to your computer, create the portable and then uninstall. After that, Atlantis folder can just be copied anywhere, it seems.

Couldn't determine where the licensing info is kept, but I'm assuming it's hashed somewhere in 'Atlantis.ini' in program folder.

At least I couldn't catch it writing to the registry, although on startup it reads mountpoints and shellfolders ("HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints*", "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" and "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders").

Thanks for the roundup but unfortunately launching the portable version from a HDD writes here to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Atlantis Word Processor" plus "C:\Users\tpr\Documents\Atlantis" plus "C:\Users\tpr\Documents\Atlantis" plus "C:\Users\tpr\AppData\Roaming\Atlantis".

Running from USB drive is almost OK - "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\GameUX" and "C:\Users\tpr\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\GameExplorer", strange.

tempted to try, but I have winword 2000, and 95 on cd. (good for an old Pentium 2 or maybe k6, but mine aren't that old)
from http://www.abisource.com/wiki/DOCX,
"This is the native file format for Word 2007 and later. Word 2000, 2002 and 2003 can be updated to read and write this format with a free download from the Microsoft web site.... Like the ODT format this format is also encapsulated in a ZIP file. Note that this format is different from the XML format released in word 2003...
.DOCM uses the same basic XML format as the Office Word 2007 XML document format, but can store VBA macro code. This file type is created when VBA macro code is present in the file.
.DOTX is the XML template format. (.DOTM is the form used to support VBA macro code)"

btw, it looks like abiword 2.8 http://www.abisource.com/release-notes/2.8.0.phtml
and 2.9 don't deal quite perfectly with docx http://www.abisource.com/mailinglists/a ... /0018.html

I installed Atlantis Word Processor as a normal program, registered it, then I went to 'Tools' and used 'Install to Removable Drive...' option, connected an external drive and installed Atlantis Word Processor there. Then I uninstalled it and deleted the many folders it had created and then copied the portable installation folder from the external drive to my 'Portable Programs' folder. After I ran it I found that Atlantis Word Processor was no longer registered (it seems that it doesn't keep its registration key in the portable installation folder) and again started creating folders outside its program folder. No, I do not call such programs portable because I don't believe they are.

Same problem. And worse. Before I bought it, I explicitly asked them if it was portable. Later they refused to give me a refund when it didn't. Their answer: We didn't say it would run from USB hubs, we didn't say it would run from encrypted drives, from mounted drives....

The tricky thing - it will start and everything seems normal. There is no visible hint that you are NOT in portable mode. Only when you are back home, you'll notice the missing files. Your templates and adress book and other condifential information got saved on the client's host machine. None of it ended up on your USB drive or stick, because for some reason or other it didn't meet Atlantis' idea of "portable".

Technically it is portable..just not at all stealth.
even with the ini file present it writes to the registry.

I have a really really older version from GAOTD that I made portable;
it stores its license info in the registry:
"[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Rising Sun Solutions, Inc.\Atlantis.1_x\RegInfo"

The new GUI (New GUI of Atlantis Word Processor) is an absolute disaster.

It's not great. I do find it a little weird when folks go the ribbon route but do some kind of tweak on the format that doesn't seem to improve things.

On the other hand, if this is easier to customize than Office 2010 (edit/delete/add icons), that might be an accomplishment.

So I didn't realize this but there's a liteware version of Atlantas called "nova" available:

http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en/nova.htm
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-too ... Nova.shtml

It hasn't been updated in a long time but the file is very small (643k) and seems to have some nice basic features.

Andrew tested it back in '06 but it may work with the INI trick mentioned for the pro version earlier in this thread.

My experience with Atlantis has been always the same: Weird image handling and harsh .docx incompatibility despite wishing the opposite time and again.
