FileBackupEX status as freeware takes some guessing: the download page states it's "BETA forever", while the purchase page declares that "BETA versions are not for sale".
The ZIP file from the "Download" page contains an installer, but if you "run the installer with the 'Advanced Manual Install' option checked and it will extract the files"; the installer can also be (Uni)extracted. In any case, it yields a single executable, the PDF manual and a REG file pointing to registry settings locations.
FileBackupEX site says it's portable when in fact it's not: the backup files database is stored in '%APPDATA%\GOFF Concepts\FileBackupEX' and settings in 'HKCU\Software\GOFF Concepts\FileBackupEX' (and, eventually, also in 'HKLM\Software\GOFF Concepts\FileBackupEX' or 'HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\GOFF Concepts\FileBackupEX'), so use of a custom launcher is advised if you want to run this portably.

If you have a large photo, movie, or document folder then FileBackupEX can automatically keep files and folders in sync with a NAS appliance or removable drive.
On a related note, the same Goffconcepts.com is responsible for previous submitted FileSearchEX, which doesn't seem to be entirely free anymore (http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... hp?t=11564)...
