Hardwipe is a slick on-demand data sanitizer for Windows with a user interface that is both beautiful and a dream to use.
Use Hardwipe to permanently erase (or "hard wipe") data on disk and portable storage media, ensuring that discarded, but sensitive, information can never be recovered by someone else.
It supports the following sanitization tasks:
  • Wipe Physical Devices
    Wipe Logical Volumes
    Wipe Files
    Clean Free Space
    Wipe Recyclers
Hardwipe supports all major sanitization schemes in common use throughout government agencies around the world.
  • Zero Overwrite
    Random Data
    GOST R 50739-95
    DOD 5220.22-M
    Schneier
    Gutmann

Hardwipe is free for individual use. The software will show ads from its own interface window and will occasionally invite you to upgrade to the ad-free version. However, you will not be required to do so and the software won't stop working if you don't.

Love the feature set and interface but wish wipe programs would quit offering Gutmann by default (maybe available only as a hidden feature). It's hugely wasteful.

Eraser has (I think) most of that and a scheduling feature. I didn't think it wiped the recycle bin but the screenshot seems to indicate that's possible so I'm not sure.

Thanks for posting.

Following up on that, even Guttman himself concurs that nowadays a couple of overwriting passes is more than enough for modern magnetic media (i.e., made after 2000); except for flash based storage, where GOST R 50739-95 (for info, see http://pcsupport.about.com/od/termsg/g/ ... 739-95.htm) is the bare minimum... :!:

On a related note, the NSA is now able to monitor even disconnected computers, according to this article from the NYT: http://nyti.ms/1cldkBT...
