DateCalc from L2 Software

#1 Post by joby_toss »

DateCalc gives the user the ability to perform numerous date calculations and variations.

P.S. the author has written many other great utilities (I'll test and add others if I have the time) and he is a very nice person (messaged him a while back about a bug and he was very responsive). He also accepts donations for his software (you get access to 64bit versions and other things in return).

EDIT: ahh, It's donationware, not freeware; found out too late, sorry! However, still a nice piece of software!

@guinness: I've just seen you voted for this one, so it became public. I had to down-vote it to make it private again. I'm sorry, but I added this one by mistake...I didn't realize it's Donationware until it was too late. By Donationware, I understand that there is no way to legally use it without paying some amount (even if it's 1$). It's still a very nice app and I would donate without hesitation if I would use it. Sorry for the misunderstanding!

Whoops! Should have paid a little more attention to the license. My bad. I down voted too.

From DateCalc EULA:
This software is free, however if you do benefit from it and find it useful please consider a donation to the developer for his time, expense and efforts to make this software possible.
I do not think that donation is compulsory. The only limitation seems this:
N.B 64bit build available to users who have donated.
For me "please consider a donation" means desirability, not obligation, but English is not my mother tongue.

I'm still not sure what "Donationware" really means. Is the donation compulsory or not? The consensus seems to be that it's not... If so, I think this entry should become public.

I concur with you and I gave DateCalc my 5 cents. I was unaware that it had been added to the database. I have used it and I have never seen any nags/donation screens. A good program in my opinion.

Since any other class of software can accept donations (freeware, commercial, adware, etc.) we reserve the term "donationware" to compulsory. Although I prefer that payment form over other options out there, it's fundamentally not freeware so of course it can't be added to the database.

On this program in particular however, if the 32-bit version works fine on 64-bit systems, this really isn't a limitation. After all, what exactly is a 64-bit date calculator going to do that a 32-bit version can't? This isn't a program that does biological simulations or database work so a 64-bit version wouldn't see a discernible speed increase.

That's what I was thinking initially, but when I checked Donationware definitions, almost everyone (including Wikipedia) says donations are optional... But if so, why the need to differentiate it from Freeware? I'm lost here...

FreeCommander has a x64 version available to donors only yet to my knowledge no one has ever questioned its place in the database.

Perhaps Donationware is Freeware which has some hope of donations while Freeware has no such hope. So for me if Donationware is not Cardware (I remember once I didn't use a cardware program because I hadn't sent a postcard to the developer- the developer's post address was in my task list but I forgot both the program and the post-card I had to send until recently when I found out that the program was abandoned) or Nagware, it is virtually Freeware.

I've tested the 32-bit version on a 64-bit system without issue. If there was some incompatibility, that would be a real issue.

To some extent this is a case of casual observers thinking donations = "donation-ware" but I think you're on to something. How about we call it "Commercial - pay what you want" from now on? I say this because you're not "donating" anything to me if I restrict use of my program until you give me money. That's completely outside the definition of "donation," which is about charity. While I suspect some casinos call their visitors' money "donations", you can't gamble for free.

@I am Baas
Please note all software on this site is DONATIONWARE
This means if you Download It and...Like It...Keep It...Then you can express your appreciation with a donation.
In my opinion "...you can express..." does not mean that you are obliged to.
