AIDA64

Formerly called Everest/AIDA32, AIDA64 is a computer diagnostics, hardware monitor and benchmark utility. It's mostly portable as it keeps most of the important settings in an INI file in the app folder, but for some reason stores window and OSD position/size in the registry.

I think AIDA64 trumps all the freeware alternatives like Speccy, Coretemp, GPU-Z, Speedfan, HWMonitor, Realtemp, HWiNFO32 etc. because it has more features and is updated more frequently to be more compatible with newer hardware. The user interface is probably the main reason I like it. It's exactly the same as the old Everest. Easy to read and find stuff.

For the reference of folks here on the site, Everest was one of the first programs added to the database: http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=4

That made me wonder which one was the first: SharpControl, a JPEG/TIFF image sharpener... http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1

I've been using it for a long time. I wish it was fully portable.

By way of a (pretty tardy) follow-up...: :)

Pix sharpening tool SharpControl v1.1 recently emerged from hibernation, after a long hiatus in "Private" never-never land...;-)

Excerpt from the main entry "Comments" section:
Amazingly good utility for tweaking assorted sharpening parameters values
(Radius | Intensity | Control | Edge) with instant preview feedback.

Let you save successive experimental parameters iterations for ulterior image evaluation.
"Almost, but not quite portable", grumbles RegScanner :

Code: Select all

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.JPG\OpenWithList	a	REG_SZ	SharpControl.exe	17	13/09/2017 11:42:44
[/medium][/pre]
PS (to anyone mildly interested)
This dormant blog chats about SharpControl development issues in its heyday (circa 2003), with contributions by developer Vtie.

I have at least a dozen programs running on my computer from 10+ years ago that are actively making my life better. As a resut, I try to spend roughly 1/4th of my time on this site working on older entries and threads.

Anyway, please feel free to keep digging up and voting for old gems that may have fallen off :)
