FYI, this kind of tool is quite standard in the Linuxverse -- e.g., see Midnight Commander (http://www.midnight-commander.org/; screenshot below)...

Midnight Commander rel. 4.8.24 released at May 21, 2020

Features
Windows XP+/32 bit native port of GNU Midnight Commander, based on the current 4.8.24 development stream.

Supports both the recent Windows 10 plus the prior legacy console, 16 and 256 colour modes are available within either.

Midnight Commander (also known as mc) is a free cross-platform orthodox file manager and a clone of Norton Commander.

Features include the ability work with common archive formats as if they were simply another directory, and to function as an SFTP/FTP client. Midnight Commander also includes an builtin editor/viewer, features include syntax highlighting for many languages, macros, code snippets, simple integration with external tools, automatic indentation, mouse support, clipboard and the ability to work in both ASCII and hex modes.

Midnight Commander can also rename groups of files, move files to a different directory at the same time as it renames them. It lets the user specify the original and resulting file names using wildcard characters.

Midnight Commander is not portable (%USERPROFILE%\Midnight Commander).

Also, it probably belongs to the CLI submissions.

In the same vein, you also have the fully portable "Kulak Commander".

Maybe Midas can create a yaP launcher for 'Midnight Commander for Windows' (I'm not very good with yaP) and put them in List of programs made portable by yaP viewtopic.php?f=6&t=22138.

Other File Managers

1. Far Manager is a program for managing files and archives in Windows operating systems. Far Manager works in text mode and provides a simple and intuitive interface for performing most of the necessary actions:

2abc. DOS Navigator - a comprehensive shell for MS-DOS.
https://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/dn/ (DOS only, e.g. for use with DOSBox)
Freeware open-source product. Other Products Based on Dos Navigator
- Dos Navigator Open Source Project http://www.dnosp.com/ (Works on Windows, OS2)
- Necromancer's Dos Navigator http://ndn.muxe.com/ (Windows)

3. Volkov commander v4.99.08a (alpha version is free to use)
Volkov Commander is purely written in assembly language, and is thus very small and fast.

"Beta version (4.99.xx), of course, can be tested for free, because in this stadium of development it does not yet represent a complete program."

(DOS only, e.g. for use with DOSBox)

Edit: highlight DOS only 2a, 3

Just to emphasize:
  • DOS Navigator and Volkov commander are DOS programs. They won't run on any modern Windows system.
  • Dos Navigator Open Source Project and Necromancer's Dos Navigator do run on Windows.

Thanks, Lintalist! You might wanna use the new thread "TUI File Managers" as a central point for CLI/TUI file managers!

Sorry for the late reply (I was absent for season holidays).

As for adding it to the yaP list, I don't think it's a good idea because that was auto-generated by tproli to reflect the current content of yaP's homepage example section (cf. http://yap.rolandtoth.hu/).

But here's a first draft for yaP launcher config for Midnight Commander -- please note, though, that I haven't tested it...

Code: Select all

; configuration file for yaP v0.7.1.5 (http://yap.rolandtoth.hu/)
; application name: Midnight Commander for Windows
; version: v4.8.24
; website: https://midnight-commander.org/

[GENERAL]
application = app\mc.exe

[BEFORE]
dir = %USERPROFILE%\Midnight Commander

...
