Pandoc (CLI document processor)

#1 Post by Midas »

A few posts are required to disentangle the mess that the MMD2PDF topic has grown into over time. This is the one devoted to pandoc (https://pandoc.org/).
author of https://pandoc.org/ wrote:If you need to convert files from one markup format into another, pandoc is your swiss-army knife. Pandoc can convert documents in (several dialects of) Markdown, reStructuredText, textile, HTML, DocBook, LaTeX, MediaWiki markup, TWiki markup, TikiWiki markup, Creole 1.0, Vimwiki markup, OPML, Emacs Org-Mode, Emacs Muse, txt2tags, Microsoft Word docx, LibreOffice ODT, EPUB, or Haddock markup...
There's a expressly named pandoc-portable repository at https://github.com/pandoc-extras/pandoc-portable -- last updated in 2017-11-21, so apparently outdated. Being a CLI tool, the official pandoc release, once extracted, will expectably behave in a portable way. Note that in order to output to PDF, pandoc needs LaTeX (natively portable MikTeX is recommended).

Download the latest pandoc release (currently v2.1.3) from https://github.com/jgm/pandoc/releases/.

One does not need to extract the installer- since version 2.0.2 pandoc is offered as archive as well:
If you prefer not to use the msi installer, we also provide a zip file that contains pandoc’s binaries and documentation. Simply unzip this file and move the binaries to a directory of your choice.

Although Linux based, below is the address of an online Pandoc primer that can be used by any Windows user.

Pandoc allows you to convert a bunch of files from one markup language into another one. Typical examples include converting a Markdown file into a presentation, LaTeX, PDF, or even ePub. This article will explain how to produce documentation in multiple formats from a single markup language (in this case Markdown) using Pandoc.

Good post, thanks for that.

My current system is like 10% LibreOffice 85% Word, and 5% Markdown, but I expect that to change in the months and years ahead. A program that can quickly and automatically switch between formats is going to definitely open some doors.
