After installation, which write entry on HKCU (entry in Start menu (eXtreme File Manager))
(I know baas said : Dl the installer (zipped) and uniextract. Seems portable but I did not fully test it yet. but I did go the whole dummy way just to check).

I did transfer the whole software folder to a thumb drive.

:!: Uninstall the software manually, NO uninstaller provided via normal tools.
:shock: Deleted entry made in registry base manually (search for xt64 and path associated with the app)

Run from windows 7 64bits via VMWare Workstation 12 player and it runs portable.
Launched via command prompt and UI. Works fine to me, :-)

download/file.php?mode=view&id=601

For who wants to test and avoid uninstalling problem I zipped the whole folder and uploaded it here:

Nice software remembering me the old dos 6.1 and all the commander console binaries. :wink:

FYI, this kind of tool is quite standard in the Linuxverse -- e.g., see Midnight Commander (http://www.midnight-commander.org/; screenshot below)...

Ah! Once upon a time, I was a regular user of NC for DOS (as well of XTree Gold, later on) -- in fact, it's the inspiring source for many similar utilities, as I'm sure I've seen stated in so many words somewhere regarding MC...

And an Amiga? Wow! Never had one, but those are mythic... :shock:

    * Newly created directories are shown in a highlighted colour,
      defined by created_colour in the colour config file.

    * Added option to Compare files during a file replace prompt.

    * Added month_format=2 for the yy/mm/dd date format (config).

* Version 7.4

    * Added grep pattern matching mode to file specifications (F).

      Can indicate files with timestamps within the last number of days,
      hours, or minutes e.g

* Version 7.2

    * Added an automatic Rename file option when preforming tagged
      copy or move file operations.

    * Batch file (CTRL B) and Write Branch (CTRL W) commands can point to
      a destination directory to create the file.

    * Improved history sharing between multiple running instances.
      Can be disabled by adding the following config option:

      shared_history = false

    * Added the insert_edit_files config option (default is false).
      Setting to true will automatically insert the newly edited file
      (or the backup .bak file), after an edit file command:

      insert_edit_files = true

    * Installer will use locale information for setting the date and time
      formats (for new installs only).

* Version 7.1

    * Copy and Rename commands support quote marks ("") to literally
      specify the destination file name.

    * Pressing 'N' in tree view invokes the new date command on the current
      directory.

    * ALT A in tree view invokes the attribute command on the current
      directory.

    * CTRL F10 has been reassigned to write the current branch to a

      result in better character fonts in some cases.

      use_oem_char = true

* Version 7.0

    * CTRL G in file view will preform a regular expression grep on the
      current tagged files. Any matching files will remain tagged while
      non-matching files will be untagged. There is also an option to
      edit the matching results in the text editor as well. The regular

    * CTRL F8 does a partial untag if a successful operation was
      preformed on that file during the last tagged event.

    * Pressing CTRL L, CTRL U in all input events will lower, or upper the
      case of the current string.

    * Clicking anywhere in an input event string will reposition the
      cursor to the mouse position.

    * The hex viewer is now a 32-bit application (H32.EXE).

* Version 3.2

    * Added the atomic delete option to the prune directory event. When
      selected the branch is deleted as a single object on drives which
      support this operation. If this fails the tree view may require a
      refresh.

    * Changed the delete directory command to prune the entire branch if
      that branch is completely logged. It will no longer fail if the
      branch contains files.

    * Increased the history window size to 19 rows.

* Version 3.1

    * Added the macro options prompt (CTRL 8) with the following
      functions:

          diagnostic information.

      SHIFT keys are pressed. This is to prevent ALT TAB from stopping
      the current executing macro.

    * Split button correctly toggles the label.

* Version 3.0

    * Added compiled macro support. Read macro.txt for details.

    * Hotkey macros can be written to disk by pressing CTRL H, W. The
      saved macros can subsequently be executed by pressing CTRL H, X
      and then entering the filename.

    * The hotkey repeat count prompt (CTRL H) supports the additional '-'
      smart mode which preprompts the repeat count with the current file
      or tree row number.

    * Added macro_directory to the configuration file. Macro files stored
      in this directory with the .mac extension are displayed in the Quick
      Macro selection window (ALT 8). Selecting an entry will execute the
      corresponding macro.

    * Pressing the A..Z keys (either shifted or unshifted) in any history
      window will jump to the next entry starting with that key. If no
      matching entry starting with that key is found the next entry
      that contains that key anywhere in it's name is selected.

    * The SPACE and SHIFT SPACE keys moves the cursor down and up
      respectively in any history window.

    * Added white_space to the configuration file to define the characters
      to treat as white spaces for the CTRL LEFT, CTRL RIGHT, and
      ALT BKSPACE commands in all input events.

* Version 2.51

    * When using the Make sub-directory or Treespec events the '/' key is
      automatically translated to the '\' character, even if pasting from
      the clipboard.

* Version 2.5

    * Added the option to search by text, hex or unicode by pressing F4
      during a search event. Valid examples of hex strings are:

        0 1 2 3 ab cde f                       (all hex string)
        null 20 terminated 20 string 0 (mixed text, hex string)

      Only a simple ASCII to Unicode expansion is supported.

    * Added the option to toggle the search case by pressing F2 during a
      search event.

    * Added the Always, Never option to the Automatically Replace Query
      for both the Copy Tagged and Mirror events. Selecting Always will
      automatically replace all files including read-only files.
      Selecting Never will never replace any existing files in the target.

    * Incremental history saves. When running multiple instances history
      data is refreshed upon saving. This means a newer instance is less
      likely to completely overwrite an updated history file.

* Version 2.4

    * Pressing CTRL+SHIFT L in all input event will lower the case of
      the current string. CTRL+SHIFT U will upper case the string.

    * The name for the batch file associated with the file open command
      is now taken from the long form of the filename's extension i.e
      instead of using JAV.BAT you would use JAVA.BAT.

    * The filenames in the audit history window are now properly quoted
      if they contain spaces.

    * The configuration compiler is now a 32-bit application. Original
      Win95 users may need to install MSVCRT.DLL if it is not already
      present.

* Version 2.32

    * Long history entries are split with an arrow to display the far
      right portion of the entry.

* Version 2.31

    * CTRL C, CTRL INS in any history display will copy the current line
      to the clipboard.

* Version 2.3

    * Added the option to delete files using the windows recycle bin. When
      deleting files or pruning directories pressing F4 toggles the
      recycle bin option. The default state can be set using the
      use_recycle_bin flag in the configuration file.
      Deleting to the recycle bin only works on fixed drives, removable
      and some RAID drives are not supported.

    * ALT W in tree view allows the recycle bin to be emptied. (Windows
      2000 or Windows 95 with IE 4.0). Seems to reset the recycle bin
      settings under Win 98.

* Version 2.2

    * ALT 9 in tree and file view displays an audit history of file copy
      rename, delete and move operations. This list is not saved after
      quitting.

    * When using the SHIFT A..Z keys to select a file or directory and
      there is no matching entry starting with that letter the next entry
      that contains that letter anywhere in it's name is selected.

    * Added a default windows icon.

* Version 2.1

    * SHIFT UP and SHIFT DOWN tag inverts the current directory in tree
      view.

    * The VIEWSTR environment variables is now set when editing a file or
      using the menu commands.

    * Fixed some bugs with the time stamp file command.

* Version 2.0

    * Major performance changes. Now even faster :-)

    * CTRL H brings up the repeat hotkey command menu. Pressing R or H
      will prompt for the number of times to repeat the last previously
      used hotkey. Pressing S or + will preprompt the repeat count with
      the number of remaining rows in either the file or tree view modes.

    * Added %6, %R, %r tokens for batch commands. These tokens designate
      the short or long pathname relative to the current branch point.

* Version 1.75

    * Releases are now packaged with the Nullsoft installer.

    * Can choose Always, Never to some queries during a tagged operation.

    * Can compare from an empty directory point. This is useful for the
      Subs compare option.

* Version 1.7

    * Now support the full 8-bit OEM character set for displaying
      file/directory names.

    * Added the Subs option to the compare directories (C, ALT F4)
      command that recurses the comparison into logged subdirectories.

    * The directional keys on the numeric keypad now work regardless of
      the numlock state.

    * Wheel mouse scroll support (Windows 2000).

* Version 1.62

    * Now displays very large file sizes in the file window by using the K
      notation to truncate by kilobytes (1000 bytes).

      the current file or directory for (O) open file, (V) view file, (J)
      JFC and (F9) menu file and directory commands.

    * Pressing TAB in any tab complete event will bring up a selection
      window even if the cursor is not placed on a word.

* Version 1.4

    * Clicking over the "DIR COMMAND" area (lower left hand corner of
      the screen) toggles the command panel lists for the CTRL and ALT
      command panels.

    * CTRL Q then the Y key in any input event will delete from the
      cursor position to the end of the line.

    * Several bug fixes regarding releasing drive resources.

Interesting info can be read on the site of Xtree Fan Page:
• XTree Fan Page: http://xtreefanpage.org/
• XTree:\Download\Clones: https://www.xtreefanpage.org/x63clone.htm

Programs listed on XTree:\Download\Clones are both freeware and commercial.

Thanks for the link.

I went through them and only a couple are actual text-mode apps usable on a modern 64-bit system (most others are either not for Windows, 16-bit, with a couple of GUI apps):
- UnixTree
- ZTreeWin (shareware)

Other than those (and Midnight commander and eXtreme), there is also Far Manager.
