3uTools - Apple iOS device manager

#1 Post by webfork »

Freeware Apple device management is something I thought had disappeared as Apple locked down their devices, but 3uTools came up with something that looked sharp. I tested it out and it so far is much better than iTunes, admittedly a very low bar.

Pros:

There's a LOT here. Wallpaper, ringtones, jailbreak, app store connection, junk cleaner, shutdown/reboot, media player, high-compression image conversion (HEIC), photo duplication, and a lot more. Unclear how they make money.

Cons:
  • Privacy concerns - A Reddit thread brings up some non-specific privacy concerns. I was hoping they made a cut of some of the purchase items but maybe it's just spyware, I can't tell.
  • Functionality - a lot of the features didn't seem to work on my device.
This came very close to actual portability by letting you set your own install and data folder (as below):

Requirements: Softpedia reports an iTunes install to work properly but I didn't have any issue. I do have Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Bonjour installed. Supposedly there's Wifi capability, but I just used a data cable.

Status: Not portable, writes to registry.

2.60.022
