Shutter Encoder - video tools

#1 Post by webfork »

Not to be confused with the system power automation tool Shutter Lite, Shutter Encoder is a very promising video encoding tool with some excellent features, including extraction, cut without re-encoding, and filters. Nice to see it supports more recent formats like AV1.

Distributes a 64-bit only "portable" version.

Status: Not portable: Writes to C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Shutter Encoder

Cross-platform with clients for Mac and Windows (Java based)

License: GPL v3

FTR, Shutter Encoder latest version is v18.0 released 2024-03-20 (changes at https://www.shutterencoder.com/changelog.html).

And a couple more info tidbits, then (official support forum is at 'r/shutterencoder/')...

SE appears to be Java based (OpenJDK v20.0 files are included with portable) but surprisingly fast in opening, that being the case...
Shutter Encoder makes use of FFmpeg to handle its encoding, allowing support for almost every codec you’ve ever heard of, and many more you haven't. Don’t just take our word for it though, Avid themselves recommend Shutter Encoder as part of your Media Composer and ProTools ingesting workflow!
Shutter Encoder is completely free software without any limitations or advertising. It continues to exist thanks to donations.

As far as I can remember, this is the first Java app I have encountered that doesn't "feel" like one. Starts fast on my old laptop and runs smoothly. The whole she-bang is >250MB on disk, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but a great tool to have if you don't mind the size.

I listed system compatibility as only Win10, since that's what I've got and I can't find any other info on this. If you have anything to add, please let me know.
