Windows File Manager (v3.0 open source!)

#1 Post by Midas »

It appears MS comes bearing gifts: the old winfile has been updated to run on modern Windows and open-sourced.

The repo is at https://github.com/Microsoft/winfile.

(EDIT: see also https://github.com/malxau/winfile)

There's a Ghacks.net overview at https://www.ghacks.net/2018/04/10/run-t ... e-manager/.

I haven't tested it but, given MS previous art, I don't expect it to be portable. Prove me wrong. :P

According to the README, one of the changes in the improved "v10.0" version is:
moved the ini file location to %AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\WinFile
That suggests that the original_plus version is indeed portable. (AFAIK, in Windows 3.x days, storing settings in program folder was common practice.)

I don't consider myself the nostalgic type and never thought I'd miss anything about Win 3.1 but surprise, surprise I find I really missed that menu system.

One may also get

WinFile.chm

About WINFILE.INI ...

... may be dealt with thru yaP?! ...

On the subject of App Portabilization I'm still a newbie - looking into it.
