Despite not being readily portable, Qt based
Ring (
https://ring.cx/), a FOSS multi-platform client for decentralized video chat network did ring (
) my curiosity bell: it's being touted as a
Skype alternative, reason enough for a post here at TPFC. It is still in Beta, but the fact that it aims to be decentralized and uses blockchain authentication is mighty interesting by itself.

Features:
A telephone: a simple tool to connect, communicate and share.
A teleconferencing tool: easily join calls to create conferences with multiple participants.
A media sharing tool: Ring supports a variety of video input options, including mutliple cameras and image and video files, and the selection of audio inputs and outputs; all this is supported by multiple high quality audio and video codecs.
A messenger: send text messeges during calls or out of calls (as long as your peer is connected).
A building block for your IoT project: re-use the universal communications technology of Ring with its portable library on your system of choice.
Interesting stuff.

It's not exactly a new update, but some months back, Ring put out an update and it's looking pretty great:

It is possible to skip the install process via 7zip installer extraction, but I couldn't fix the config file location. It's at (c:\Users\USERNAME\.config\ring) and it doesn't matter if you move it to the app folder. Seems like it's in early development so hopefully something will turn around with that.

The program has a new name: Jami

I did try testing the mobile version some time ago but it seemed early stage. I'll almost certainly come back to it in the coming year.
As to Skype, I much prefer any number of other tools (including probably Jami once it reaches a more mature status), but because its ownership is such a cornerstone of every office environment, Skype ends up getting thrown in as part of a software bundle.

I came back to this for portability -- still haven't checked out many of the communication features. I can say that, while not as configurable as many programs in this space, it does enable both call recording and the ability to ALWAYS record calls, something I've been looking for. That may not seem privacy friendly, but really any call can be recorded, this is just simpler.
