This program is getting better slowly so I wanted to point out they are up for a portable version but there's no timeframe. Certainly UI issues and collaboration elements are priority, since those are what's going to be their income generators.

Topic update: ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors v5.3.3 released (changes at https://github.com/ONLYOFFICE/DesktopEditors/releases).

FYI, there's a 64-bit "contributor" portable/noinstall(?) version linked from Github Issues (check github.com /ONLYOFFICE/DesktopEditors/issues/151#issuecomment-455101681), plus a couple of non-official PAF packages floating around (just Google), but still no official Windows portable version, just a Linux one (APPIMAGE). :|

The noinstall version mentioned doesn't appear to be up-to-date with the other releases, but it's a route to get it on your computer if you can't install it.

They do appear to be continuing to add tools and functionality on a 2 month release schedule, and I haven't seen much in the way of efforts to mimic or replace PowerPoint in freeware for quite some time. So I'm pleased to see ongoing work here. Still, my tests on my Win7x86 system were not encouraging:

* Their ongoing narrative that they have full fidelity with MS Office is nonsense. The very first document I checked with some track changes elements was very different than the MS Office counterpart and the change tracking itself was less than clear (I couldn't differentiate normal from edit text on a simple black-and-white file).
* The program is still huge, pushing a 150 meg install file and a 500 meg base install, roughly as large as LibreOffice with no where near the feature set.
* Generally slow on my system. Opening a simple text file took 20 seconds. Basic operations were very sluggish. Initial launch was also very slow.
* Fonts generally seemed problematic across the program, just rendering oddly. Especially with a PDF file.

Hopefully they continue to improve the program and some of these issues get resolved.

Good to have that kind of insider feedback. I'm sticking with my aging SM Office...

I should point out that I remain very optimistic here: in a space where it's either MS or Google, both of which represent a lot of tedious vendor lock-in and a very mixed privacy policy (Google especially but MS is not immune), people definitely want a third option. Big companies currently pay big to avoid all that in their server rooms. Something that's open source, cloud-based, collaborative, and you can run your own server / download an run a copy locally are all important. Maybe ONLYOFFICE is just waiting for their first 100M account to really build out the software.

I do have faith that the speed issues will get cleared up, though as they're advertising compatibility with Vista and XP, I'm surprised there's less emphasis on being quick and lightweight. Maybe they can come up with a version that's just a local server that auto-launches your browser to access? Who knows.
