Elephant (Evernote/OneNote alternative)

#1 Post by webfork »

Cross-platform, open source Evernote alternative that appears to have hesitated in terms of development and needs some usability work.

Portable: No, writes settings to C:\Users\USERNAME\.com.pinktwins.elephant.settings

Other notes:

I was disappointed that the program advertises the ability to sync over DropBox and similar tools. Clearly the functionality would break if you didn't have the database saved to the same username and file location on both computers

I'm a little annoyed that the author is calling the program "Elephant Premium" as I think that's just confusing but given my frustrations with OneNote and Evernote, I don't blame him/her.

Good:

* Very solid file embedding tool
* Handles PDFs well, though it seems to want you to give the PDF it's own area as I couldn't seem to click around it. If you just click the document, it'll duplicate the tab. Not sure what that's about.

Wishlist:

* Needs image resize
* No right-click functionality (e.g. to cut, copy, or paste an image)

Github: https://github.com/jusu/Elephant

EDIT: I tested version 29

Update: just tested version 44. No change in settings locations so still not portable.

* I like the way it handles images (this has been something of a sticking point with Markdown adoption) but I'm frustrated it won't support clipboard image pasting
* Can't figure out how the encryption function works
* No notes sync system

Old thread update: appears to be discontinued, with the final update listed as last year on Softpedia: https://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-to ... hant.shtml

Ghacks did an article on it around the same time: https://www.ghacks.net/2020/03/13/eleph ... plication/
