Glasswire (network security utility)

#1 Post by Midas »

Glasswire is a network monitor utility that has been getting a lot of attention recently (see below), despite it's initial beta status...

Glasswire is Qt5 based and not compatible with Windows XP, but works on all subsequent Windows iterations. After some summary testing, the major obstacle for portability seems to be its reliance on installation of a kernel driver (32 and 64 bit versions are included in the Windows installer).
http://www.glasswire.com/ wrote:GlassWire displays your network activity on an easy to understand graph while searching for unusual Internet behavior that could indicate malware or violations of your privacy. Once unusual network activity is discovered you're instantly alerted with detailed information so you can protect your computer, privacy, and data.

FYI, I posted a suggestion for Glasswire portability to forum.glasswire.com/t/a-couple-of-suggestions/53/2.

Download latest Glasswire installer (v1.0.21 Beta) from http://www.glasswire.com/download.

Very eager to try this one out and it's the perfect sort of thing to have as a USB tool, having performance, diagnostic, security, and other uses.

Edit: okay this program totally rules. My only wish is that I could do some longer-term bandwidth analysis metrics but that seems like the sort of thing you'd buy rather than get for a freeware diagnostics tool.

Played around with it when it was released, very slick UI. One thing to keep in mind is the service it installs is constantly running in the background, whether the app is open or not.

Version 2.1.140 is out. Lots of changes since this file was last discussed here both in the interface and under the hood. Very good stuff: https://www.glasswire.com/changes/

Glasswire sadly appears to have dropped available free options. Softpedia now listing it as a "demo" https://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/ ... Wire.shtml

[Edit: Ignore -- it's the same as the Softpedia version.] Filehippo claims to have a fully free version (untested): https://filehippo.com/download_glasswire_free_firewall/

For those really attached to this program, there's currently a promo out if you decide to buy: https://deals.slashdot.org/sales/glassw ... bscription
