Re: Geek Uninstaller

I beg to differ: sadly, Geek Unistaller isn't stealth, but it is portable. :!:

There are just two trivial user configurable settings, "interface language" and sort mode (both under menu "View", and sort mode can easily be set by clicking the respective column header, too), but the convenience of this no frills uninstaller that packs both a 32 and a 64 bit version into a single executable is hard to beat -- it has never failed me nor caused any undue trouble. It might not be perfect, but its tradeoffs are better than just reasonable. Yet again, having stated that, I'll abide the call of the majority any which way...

And, for anyone willing to go that route, here's a yaP launcher config:
  • Code: Select all

    ; configuration file for yaP v0.6.19 (http://rolandtoth.hu/yaP/)
    ; application name: geek Uninstaller
    ; version: v1.3.3.46
    ; website: http://www.geekuninstaller.com/

    [GENERAL]
    application = geek.exe
    ; commandline =
    ; workdir =

    [BEFORE]
    dir = %APPDATA%\Geek Uninstaller :: Data
    regkey = HKCU\Software\Geek Uninstaller

    [...]
FYI, the files in '%APPDATA%\Geek Uninstaller' are the installed programs cached list ('cache.dat') and the user settings ('prefs.xml'); the reg key contains the last date GU ran, obviously for update checking purposes; grantedly, they could all have been easily kept in the application folder.

On a final note, freeware Revo Uninstaller (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1398) is crippled liteware that has problems dealing with 64 bit programs (http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... php?t=7527 and http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... hp?t=20394) and is unable to uninstall some others (http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... hp?t=20320). IMHO, a better third party alternative would be Wise Program Uninstaller (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2488).

Thanks, added the config here.

I rarely use uninstallers but I ususally use MyUninstaller.
Is it in the TPFC database? I can't find it.

@mods
I guess these topics could be merged:

I added "uninstaller" as a keyword to the MyUninstaller entry. Now it will show up even if you have a space in the name. :)

Very wise, thanks!

Hopefully I won't omit any of the other characters next time :)

Of course you do... however, GU is not portable and it is not "just two trivial user configurable settings" (Psst... window position and size). It does not belong in the database, change the entry to yaP if you have to.

Is GU phoning home?

  • Yes. :(

    Windows position? Trivial. At least for me. And there are plenty of other bad apples in the database -- at least this one is up to snuff... :P

Sorry, going to ask webfork to add a note to the entry, this is not the "Midas Awesome Software Collection".

  • No need to bother our awesome mod -- if you're so intent on demoting GU, just say it and I'll downvote it myself. :|

    It's a shame really, since I find it's a good soft, worthy in spite of its many shortcomings...

Really? Window position and size settings aren't tangental? For a window manager it makes sense that wouldn't be portable but an uninstall tool?

I'm just asking, I might be wrong about this.

Don't give him any ideas or he'll start his own. :)

It is convenient to take things out of context, is it not, webfork?

Finally did, too. As much as I enjoyed Geek Uninstaller for its quick and no-frills readiness, when devs are this impervious to portability requests, I reckon there's no other option than removing any TPFC database endorsement... :(
