Hi,

Does anyone know if this program (Folder Guide v1.1 by www.freeware365.com) is possible to be portable? I think it is a very good program. Since I need to be administrator at my office PC to install it, and I'm not, I only use it at home..... Any ideas?

Taken from the Softpedia listing:
"Select from right click menu "Folder Guide" then click on your desired folder. Folde Guide runs automatically as part of the Windows Explorer context menu, so you will never need to start the program otherwise you want to edit the list of folders. It also works from the desktop, the Start button."

It seems like this application is designed to be operated closely along-side explorer, so I doubt it's portable in any sense. It seems to me, though, that it's trying to replicate what tabbed file managers are doing (I use tabbyFile and have tabs to all of my commonly used folders open at all times for easy access). Have you considered a file manager alternative?

The problem is when I try the save a file from Word, Excel or other program and I want to access my favorite folder directly from the "Save as dialog" and I can't see how tabbyfile can solve that feature.....

First, unless your folder structures are identical at the office and at home, I don't see how this solution, even if it were portable, would be that beneficial.

Have you tried using the "My Places" feature in Windows? When you open the Save As... dialog in Word or Excel,
1. navigate your way to the parent of your favorite folder and highlight the folder.
2. Pick the drop-down arrow next to Tools (at the top right)
3. Pick Add to "My Places"
4. That folder should now appear as an icon at the left side of the dialog box. You can rearrange the order of your icons to suit your preferences by right-clicking on the icon and picking either "Move Up" or "Move Down."

It's not portable. But, you don't have to be an Administrator either.

Regards,
Dan

Um... DM2 has this functionality and is completely portable. Find it here. Doesn't require administrator rights either.

That's right, I know that, but there's something I didn't figure out yet, because sometimes when I select a folder (within DM2 favorites), it saves automatically the file, without asking the name I want for that file.

The DM2 favorite is valid on "non" Microsoft software. DM2 favorite don't work on Word, Excel......

About the folder structure question, made by usdcs, I always use my portable software on pen drive....I dont' care about host PC.

I noticed the same behavior with DM2 and the Office applications, too.

After I made my earlier posting, I thought about the fact that you might be saving everything on your USB drive.

What about adding your USB drive (and folders) to your Favorites? I've created shortcuts to the file system and saved them there.

Dan

[EDIT] Or, I'll sometimes create Shortcuts to other places and tuck them in my Temporary Internet files folder - for when I open an attachment to an e-mail and want to do a Save As... - or to jump from my %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\... folders to the other places that I store data. Again, not portable, nor elegant, but it works. :)

It works with Office, Totalcmd and mostly everything too. No need Totalcmd its working. Open source. I use it from HDD but I think it would work from USB.
