Resizing windows to different resolutions

#1 Post by webfork »

Frequently developers write software for (their) larger monitor and essentially break it for the rest of us. With this in mind, a developer friend of mine asked me for something to help him quickly adjust windows to 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, etc. and avoid this. The best one I found so far is not portable: Sizer. The application should also be able to do customized resolutions for small screens like PDAs and cell phones.

Anyone have ideas or suggestions?

Research

My search results with programs here on the site were mixed. This program is supposed to do exactly this is SecondShell (FWG review), but I was unable to get this to work. I was really surprised Dexpotdidn't have a window resize feature that would do this since it seems to do almost everything else. Many programs such as NiftyWindows and Griddy claim to do this but require the NumPad, which I don't have. Freewaregenius mentions DM2under the "Sizer" entry, but I couldn't figure this one out.

Disclaimer: Multiple programs I tested seemed not to function as advertised, but its possible the multiple window tweaking programs started interfering with each other even when I closed them. I plan to go back and retest them individually.

WinSize2- moves and resizes windows

I think it's portable but have to test it yet.

I use Window Ruler when I create my applications. Seems to work well. I believe it is in the forum here.

Mihov Active 800x600 is a program for web and software developers. It helps them see how large a program or browser window would be if resized to a screen size of 800x600 pixels, 1024x768 pixels or any other desired size.

There's a .zip version that does not require installation @ http://download.mihov.si/Active800x600.zip (not tested for portability)

Another one is Size-O-Matic. Standalone (not portable) but you might want to contact the developer and ask for the sourcecode.

Here's a great resource for Window Manager/Resizer/Arranger... http://www.techsupportalert.com/content ... ranger.htm

In DM2 if you right-click the maximize button (user-configurable) you'll see the options.
Ticking 'Other...' allows you to resize to width and height.

EDIT:
Sizer 3.4 Dev Build 465 (Beta!) is available from http://www.brianapps.net/sizer/sizer34.html.

Dev Build 455 was the first version able to save settings in a (XML) file alongside the program; it's now also x64 compatible.

(For cross-reference purposes, there's another topic discussing this type of utilities at http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... .php?t=865)

Just a note to point out that I am Baas solved his own doubt... http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 650#p48650
