Audacity - multi-track audio editor

What do you forumgoers think, should we replace the current Portable Audacity entry with John T. Haller's package? I understand we could simply point to the PortableApps.com version in the description, but since he just updated his (and it seems he'll probably continue updating it more often than the current entry) it'd be best to have his version take over and give a link to the current one in the description.

Now, decipher that paragraph and provide input.

Sorry Fluffy. I just did that without reading the forum first.

I typically prefer John's portable packages over others, since he appears to update them in a timely manner.

I have done exactly what you suggested and mentioned PortaSoft's version as an alterative.

No need for apologies - it seems like we were all sharing the same brain on this issue. :)

Audacity Beta versions (1.3.x) are natively portable

There's information in the Wiki here:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... e_Audacity

There are unicode and ansi zip files here:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/downloa ... ws#recdown
Extract it to the directory of your choice. Create a directory inside named "Portable Settings" and you're done.

You can copy lame_enc.dll to the same folder. You can extract the LADSPA plugins (only available as a single installer) with Universal Extractor and place them all in the Plugins subdirectory. The same goes for the VST plugin enabler (except that it's available in a zip file).

You can also set the temporary directory in the settings, if you don't want to use the %user%\temp directory

I think it should be at least noted in the database entry:
http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=648

If not already, when it comes out of beta I think it should be the main entry (not that I'm holding my breath - 1.3.0 was released in 2005!!), then the PortableApps and X- versions can be noted in the description.

I've compiled the help file for Audacity v1.3.11 unicode (beta) available here.
It is much easier to use than the original uncompiled html help files (that require a browser), and somehow needed since from v1.3.1 up, Audacity is natively portable (thanks, ashghost!).

I used the wonderful little free tool called htm2chm.

Here it is (5.53MB; original help folder was ~8.5MB):

Saves many settings in the registry.

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yaroslav Kirillov\htm2chm]
Not portable.

I'm using a JauntePE launcher that, strangely enough, works on my 64bit OS. :)

Could you make your launcher available??

Which OS's does your launcher support?

Has anyone tested Audacity Portable under Win7x64? It's not launching on my system. X-Audacity is working ok.

Audacity Portable is tested on Windows 7 x64 before release. I know Audacity Portable has additional features above X-Audacity including automatic directories for FFMpeg, LAME and VSTPlugins, but that shouldn't cause it not to work. The only other thing I can think of offhand is if your local machine has a corrupted/misconfigured Visual C++ runtime install on the local PC that is interfering with the VC runtimes set in side by side mode included in Audacity Portable. What happens if you try to run audacity.exe directly? For additional trouble-shooting, I'd recommend the official form here so other devs can help: http://portableapps.com/forums/support/ ... y_portable
