They're talking about taking it open source I would be very cynical to this if it wasn't by a team that hadn't already created one of my favorite editors:

Whoa. I thought PhotoFiltre LX was a dead project. :o

PhotoFiltre LX has been written from stratch, and it has been in development for a really long time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LR1v-dRszQ

If I recall correctly, I found the project in early 2011. At the time Dylan Coakley was the only programmer in the project, and I thought he doesn't have the endurance to write an entire image editor from stratch.

Nice to see that I was wrong. :)

(By the way: the PhotoFiltre LX team is independent from the PhotoFiltre team. They are different people.)

Ran the photofiltre-lx beta and took a few notes:

It's an early-stage beta so, although it's pretty solid and many functions work, there's clearly some pockets that aren't ready yet. Some of the tools didn't work quite right, some of the menus were empty.
  • Uniextract works pretty well
  • Basic image filters, good format support
  • Some available batch operations
I liked the original program a lot (I see it as the only replacement for Microsoft Office 97's great photo editor program) so I'm eager to see what happens next.

So there are two PhotoFiltre programs now:

* Portable PhotoFiltre Studio X (currently at 10.12.0). Unfortunately Softpedia is listing it as a trial:

* PhotoFiltre LX (open source, cross platform): http://photofiltre-lx.org/about/
