Have you ever watched the movie "Best of the Best" ?

I wanted to launch a comprehensive selection of portable software, aimed to run a complete computer and more.

The programs must be stable, memmory efficient, practical, and KISS aprooved.

Kinda selection of software to do everything you want.

what do you guys think ? let's do that !

meow, I think that it's too subjective based upon what a person wants out of their progies

But that's just my opinion and it means nothing to anyone but me

Not all of the following are freeware, but I have compiled portable versions of them all. They may not be the smallest but they do the trick for me.

Ad-Aware - Anti-spyware program. Slow scanning but pretty good program.

AIMP Player - Not the most feature-rich but it is lightweight and easy-to-use.

Anti-Malware - One of the best spyware and virus removers I've
ever used.

SUPERAntiSpyware - Not the best real-time protection but excellent scanning.

SpywareBlaster - Anti-spyware but safe guarding critical files. Run it and then close.

BonkEnc - Music ripping program. Easy to use and pretty fast in my opinion.

CCleaner - File cleaner, registry cleaner, startup manager, uninstaller and it's tiny.

ClamWin - Free anti-virus program. Meant purely for scannng, not protecting.

Disk Cleaner - File cleaner. Scans HDD and you choose what to remove. Small, too.

Firefox - The best browser out there. Fast, secure and you can add stuff with addons.

FrostWire - Just like LimeWire Pro, but completely free. Better results, faster downloads.

GetRight - Fast and easy-to-use download manager. Better than Free Download Manager.

JkDefrag - The best defragmenter purely because it's one-click-go. Small and fast.

Registry Mechanic - Do I really need to say why this program is on the list? Seriously.

mp3DirectCut - Make your own ringtones using this small and simple audio cropper.

nCleaner - Another file cleaner, like CCleaner, but a little bigger. Still fast though.

Paint.NET - Make pics B&W, change hue, contrast, brightness, fix red-eye, rotate. etc.

Spybot S&D - Anti-spyware app aimed more towards visible spyware like toolbars.

TuneUp Utilities - All-In-One program to speed up, clean and repair erros on your system.

Revo Uninstaller - Uninstall programs, then scan and remove the crap the uninstallers left.

Unlocker - Good for removing stubborn malware or files that are locked and can't be deleted.

uTorrent - Small, fast torrent downloader. One alternative may be Halite but I like uTorrent.

VideoGet - Download videos from YouTube, MetaCafe, Break, Ebaum's World, etc.

what we need is to set some rules and that makes things a lot less subjective.
rules based on performance, memory utilisation, cpu intensive or not, etc...

Spybot portable has a bigger and better hit and clean statistics, also bigger signature base.

Foobar uses less resources than AIMP, it also has a dataabse.

you use too much reduddant programs for the same task.

bonkenc is good

ccleaner is good

ccleaner does what disk cleaner does

firefox is NOT portable. i don't care what other people say. it doesn't restrict itself to the directory. you need to thinapp it. I use thinapped firefox.

Frostwire is not portable. use emule.

getright must be thinstalled.

jkdefrag is ok.

delinv is better that unlocker after many trial and errors.

we can start by naming ALL the categories and functions that we want our software portable to do.

I have to agree. A simple example; if you use several OS's, the ability to have the same GUI and data file structure on all the OS's may be very important to you, affecting your choices. Someone else may be a single OS user and simply not care.
It may be more practical to select a 'recommended' list that is limited to 1-3 recommendations in each category.

I agree with MiDoJo.

I even think it goes against the spirit of TPFC. There are, for example, 15 text editors, 35 program launchers, and 18 file managers in the database. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Everyone has different opinions about portability, filesize, and RAM usage. Some people prefer laser-focused single-function applications, and others like Swiss army knives. This site attempts to be fairly inclusive of those preferences.

How many of you, if you downloaded an application suite, wouldn't immediately remove some applications and add some others? This is the place you go when you want to find out what's out there and make your own.

There are lots of portable application "suites" out there - Lupo's PenSuite, the PortableApps Suite, TheInfoBox, Floppy Office, and several more that I don't care to try to remember right now. If you want to make your own suite, feel free. Getting more than 2 or 3 people here to agree on a set of applications would probably be impossible. If you list as much of your specific criteria as possible, you might be able to get somewhere.

EDIT: added missing "to get" to last sentence.

ok, you all have a point, but this point is based on preferences, specific preferences based on very subjective aspects.

IF you put all that aside, there are some stuff that you can quantify.

Spyware removers can be compared just like antivirus comparisons that are available in av-comparatives. so you can make a based decision.

Also, the size can be quantified, functions, features, ram usage and cpu usage can be quantified.

For example, a portable app that has crashed on me for several time already is not worth it, and people should be able to know that.

My proposition is to compile, here on the forums, no need for suites, a list of the best one or two programs per category, and have people vote for removal or addition based on new aspects.

for example, a program would be on the list, and if one or two people saw some crashes for no apparent reason, or a high cpu usage, then it is being replaced.

that way, we can always have a list of the best performing programs out there.

people can still look in the database and use something else.

I use Spybot S&D as well as Ad-Aware. In fact, I use quite a few anti-spyware programs.

Foobar is smaller than AIMP but I am aiming to suggest the one that is more-feature-rich while still maintaining a small program size.

Too many redundant programs for the same task. I'd like you to elaborate on this statement.

Firefox is portable, no matter what you may think. Not to mention the fact that I use my personal Firefox on my home computer only, and I have a Thinstalled version for use on other computers.

FrostWire is portable. I have a version that is compiled in the same format as the programs on PortableApps.com

GetRight does not need to be Thinstalled. It is portable as long as you do not integrate it into the browser.

Delinv is a program I have yet to hear of, but my portable version of Unlocker has worked wonders for me.

I base my list on experience, not purely preferences or opinions. I tried to list the best program in each category and it is very hard to narrow it down to just one app per category. I tried to help and make a list for this post, but instead it seems to be pointless. I suggest someone come up with an outline and list categories. Then, list why that app is the best in that category. There is no way for someone to post a list without having formed it using some bit of opinionation.

Also, size should not be a huge factor in determining which apps are best/worse considering the fact that you can easily get a 2GB flash drive for $15 or $20. If you want a larger capacity portable device, buy an internal hard drive for real cheap and put it in an external case.

I do know that launch times are a factor but you have to think that they are launching from a device that has a limited speed. USB 1.1 transfer at a max speed of 12 Mb/s and USB 2.0 transfers at a max speed of 480 Mb/s.

yes, i agree... how about we do that together here ? let's start by making the list of required functions to manage a hole computer.
