Request: ZipGenius Portable

#1 Post by portackager »

http://www.zipgenius.it/eng/index.php

"ZipGenius is the absolutely free software for Windows® that lets you compress files to almost any kind of archive. ZipGenius supports more than 20 compressed archive formats, including CD/DVD-ROM image files in ISO9660 standard. This is the file compression suite you were searching for: it is free and easy to use, plus it supports more than 20 formats of compressed archives, including RAR, ARJ, ACE, CAB, SQX, OpenOffice.org documents and the excellent 7-zip. ZipGenius now can precompress executable files going to be added to a ZIP archive through the UPX compressor."

According to the author he is making a portable version of zip genius, but progress has seems to stop as this was written back in 2006.

In the meantime, As far as I can understand, you can redistribute it, so I guess if anyone is up for a challenge they could make a launcher for it. :D

Old topic update: reviewed ZipGenius while looking for current freeware archive manager alternatives; still not natively portable, plus development seems to have stopped in 2011; but the homesite is still available and ZipGenius has some rather cool features -- a couple of examples are the settings export button and the possibility to setup third-party external packers/unpackers. I haven't delved into the encryption features, but that's another interesting area.

Latest version (v6.3.2.3110) can be downloaded from http://www.zipgenius.com/?id=33; the resulting executable can be easily UniExtracted and I've put up a preliminary yaP launcher config at http://pastebin.com/FD4K13Jr...

A prior JauntPE launcher made by joby_toss is still available for download from http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 360#p18360 ...

After having such a brief intro statement, I decided to spend some time testing this program. The short version: wait for the next release.

Good stuff

File types ZipGenius claims support for a lot of file types, some I’d never heard of:
  • ZIP zip, cpz, dfsz, pcv, bsz, mskin
    Encrypted zip: czip
Disk Images: czip, iso, nrg, cmi
other: 7z, cab, rar, cbr, r00, r01, arc, arj, ace, zoo, lzh, lha, pk3, pak, jar, ear, war, sqx, tar, taz, tgz, gz, rpm, xpi, wal, wmz, yz1, uu, uue, xx, xxe, b64, mim

Note that arc, arj, zoo, and lzh all require additional external tools that are probably not portable.
Making zip files
  • I really liked the zip creation menu sequence. It's easy to understand, goes step by step, and gives you all the options. This is really the killer feature of the program. Unfortunately adding a signature gave some odd error message and I couldn't figure out exactly what adding a signature does.
Issues

Security
  • A bit on the buggy side so I'd wait for future ones before messing with this, unless you want to help the ZG folks with testing.
  • The security settings were a bit on the confusing side. Mysteriously decides to introduce it's own security method as well as support all the others. CZIP format seemed to have some interesting and cool features, but it's unclear what if any other programs can open a protected file that DOESN'T use CZIP.
  • You can add a readme.txt file, which I tested, but it doesn't seem to go anywhere.

Well, the new version is out but the changes aren't particularly impressive nor is there a "portable" version on the download page. The requirements page indicates that it can be "converted" into a portable application but I couldn't find any other data so at this stage I'm guessing they decided the portable track was a waste of time. *shrug

I tested the latest version of ZipGenius- 6.3.2.3115 and it didn't integrate to Windows shell. Has anyone experienced the same problem?

Old thread update:

It seems ZipGenius Portable as been dropped or just ignored.

Thread (brace yourself for all the broken HTML):
http://www.zipgenius.com/zipgenius-port ... l-release/

Download area (referenced by the above post) no longer lists a portable version:
http://www.zipgenius.com/zipgenius-download-center/

I guess that's all.
