PrtScr (screenshot utility)

#1 Post by Midas »

No mention of PrtScr in the forums (although the submitter seems to be still around), but there's an unvoted private entry in the database (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2645); as it seems a simple but clever screen capturing utility, supposedly natively portable (I haven't fully tested it yet, and the only download is an installer), I felt it deserved at least a forum topic.

It's great, but unfortunately restricted to the Windows Tablet PC Edition, and some versions of Vista. Also, Snipping Tool fails to capture overlay windows (those translucent windows mostly used by desktop gadgets).

PrtScr current (v1.0) installer can be (Uni)extracted; download it from http://www.fiastarta.com/PrtScr/Download.html.

How do I make this app portable (not saving settings into the registry and not creating the appdata screenshots folder)?

@Midas: you can use upx (ArcThemAll!) to compress the dsp_ipp.dll file (it gets about 8 times smaller and I got no errors while testing it). Maybe this way it will work on XP, too. :)

Note: I tested version 1.7.0.0

May I suggest yaP, since you demonstrated that PrtScr isn't really portable, something that slipped my sloppy testing (I'm currently on Win7 x64, can't replicate). But thanks for all the info.

BTW, and pending further testing, I have downvoted PrtScr...

PrtScr is original but unfortunately, as joby_toss has pointed out- it is not portable:

Code: Select all

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PrtScr
I tested versions 1.5.0.0 and 1.7.0.0 and both worked fine on my Windows 8 system but not being portable is a major drawback.
