PickMeApp

#1 Post by Midas »

PickMeApp is supposedly able to transfer installed applications between Windows installations; haven't seen it around probably because it's still Beta but it claims portability (it saves settings to a 'settings.xml' file in the program folder, but i haven't thoroughly tested, so beware; also, see further down for another warning)... I guess a post is in order here. :)
http://pickmeapp.com/pickmeapp author wrote:PickMeApp is a portable software tool transferring about a million personalized programs from one PC to another. PickMeApp's 'Add and Remove Programs' like interface guides you through the transfer of selected programs without the need to locate CDs or repeat any lengthy installations. When complete, all your programs and customizations will be transferred intact to the new PC. No changes are made to the original installations, and the transfer can be easily reversed.

You can download the current PickMeApp version (v0.6.2.3) from http://pickmeapp.com/download...

Note that, apparently, email registration is required; you can bypass that by clicking the "download a non-personal PickMeApp from this site" link just above the form.

The downloaded InnoSetup file can be (Uni)Extracted, but take care because warning #1 below concerning adware still applies!
  • Warning #1, from GHacks.net review:
Note: The program contains adware offers as part of its installation. Make sure you hit on the decline button if you do not want programs such as the Delta Toolbar installed on your system.
  • Warning #2, from Softpedia:
Note: PickMeApp downloaded directly from a PickMeApp site receives a unique PickMeApp ID. Only those PickMeApp installations that have their unique PickMeApp generated by PickMeApp Site are valid applications. Only those installations can be registered, request support, receive updates, and enjoy many other features available for registered users.

It's still a great idea. Thanks for looking into it and giving the breakdown. This is something that I would have spent a Saturday on trying to figure out.
