SoftMaker Office 2006 and 2008, but they're both outdated.
Downloading requires registration, which the site historically doesn't allow.

That said, new software is added to the site in a democratic fashion, so if enough people get behind a program they have to provide an email address to download, I'm certain we'd update the official entry. At this stage, it seems nobody on this site wants to deal with:
  1. Getting a temporary email address for however long it takes to get a download code or deal with spam of one form or another from SoftMaker
  2. Testing to see if claims of portability are real or wishful thinking
... so the old version remains.

I did... (number 1, number 2 is on the ToDo list)

I've long been a fan of the SoftMaker suite, especially because it reads MS Office documents and works on Linux; I just didn't think the update was that big a deal to be advertised.

Seems like so many hoops to jump through when LibreOffice and such-like are free without the hassle.

Thanks, webfork; but why is the topic named 'Rec FreeOffice' instead of 'SoftMaker FreeOffice' as in the first post (or else 'FreeOffice' only)?

(Rethorical question, I know: the mishaps of forum management also made "Re: How to submit an application to the database directly" the subject of your merge acknowledging post... ;))

Makes sense. I combined the threads. The Rec FreeOffice thread didn't belong in Submission anyway.

Marginally related to Free Office, a professional writer compelling assessment of the long term evils(?) of MS Word that seeded an extensive debate in its comments section:

I think the only real alternative to the format issues that this article is concerned about is an open document format. I don't know if it's the format they just named the "Open Document Format" but I don't have any reason to think that the formats FreeOffice uses are any better than Word.

That said, I understand FreeOffice does have a better Office conversion filter so if you're going to leave their format, that's probably the route to take.

Following up my previous post (and my yet unsuccessful mucking about elsewhere at TPFC forum) here's a related article:

Easily portabilized Softmaker Office has been my office suite of choice for quite some time -- in both Linux and Windows -- so I find the following 3rd party review very relevant, although written from a Linux viewpoint:

The current version of FreeOffice is based off of Softmaker Office 2012.

FreeOffice 2016 is coming out this Spring according to the Softmaker devs:

Code: Select all

When that comes out, I would love to do a yaP version of this!
is it stealth? ;)

I installed SoftMaker FreeOffice and then exported it to USB but the info panel in FreeOffice USB disappeared- see the screen-shots below:
- normal installation:
SoftMaker FreeOffice Rev 703 - 2016-04-14 - 001.png
- USB installation:
SoftMaker FreeOffice Rev 703 - 2016-04-14 - 002.png
Is this normal?

IDK, maybe caused because some of the info is collected online? Have you tried the menu option shown below? Oh, and the 2012 version (rev 698) suits me fine... :)

@Midas
Thank you for your response. I am curious- does the info in the sidebar (FreeOffice information) disappear in your portable installation too or this occurs on my machine only? This happens with both versions of FreeOffice I have (Rev 698 & Rev 703, the latter seems to be the latest).
