MSN Messenger replacement

#1 Post by Leif »

I have a friend whose MSN Messenger has gone haywire. Now he wants to put a chat messenger (compatible with MSN Messenger) on his USB stick (MSN Messenger not being portable). Any ideas? TIA!

Try Miranda IM Portable - http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/miranda_portable

You could use version 7.5.xxx

It will run on different computers without needing to be installed. It does leave some registry items, but the items won't open any un-needed privacy.

HKCU/Software/Microsoft/MSNMessenger

Also, everything will work fine, video and audio.

Run A-Patch on it too if you like.

Thanks for your tip, Rykenden.
Yeah, A-Patch - http://apatch.org/ - rules!

I should correct myself.... when running msn messenger 7.x off a usb, and on another computer, be mindful to go through the Security settings under Options.... don't wanna leave any logs behind.

As replacement for the MSN messenger I can highly recommend GaimPortable (soon to be Pidgin or so), which you can find here: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/gaim_portable

Runs very reliably from my stick, and imho nicer than Mirinda (just a matter of taste).

Cheers
Chris

Another tiny solution is PixaMSN. Tiny and simple:

Or maybe miranda itself?
It's smaller, faster and as portable as the "portable" one.

if you prefer the full functionality of MSN, there's a thinstalled version of MSN floating around... this makes MSN totally portable.

or google "msn portable" and you should find plenty of options.

--------

FYI, i use miranda myself!
pixamsn is good as well if you just need basic messaging capability and the filesize doesn't hurt!

hmm whats wrong with pidgin? (if memory isn't a requirement ;) )
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%2 ... rtableMode

otherwise Miranda is just fine... idk why people use "patches" when there are equally great open source software out
