I tested this out for a few days. Its intimidating in terms of file managers and really not suitable for casual file management. Power users will be right at home.
Also, what's the portable install process? I ran Universal Extractor and that didn't seem to work.

You won't ever believe it.
First install it. You can do it even without admin rights.
Then open the "Help" menu.
The last entry of the penultimate section is "Install Multi-Commander on USB-device."
A potential USB-location is preset (anyhow it was the case on my computer). When you change it to a non USB-location, the installer will release a warning about it, but you will have the option to install it anyhow.
Tricky, huh?
BTW, in the forum of MC I have found a thread with a user's proposal asking for a plain portable package. MC's author wanted to look into that problem but his message was dated sometimes end of July. So it is still an open question whether there will be a portable package or not.

Lacks of internal file associations and that's a show-breaker to me. Otherwise great app.

ADDED - NEW ! FileType Management. Configure what Viewer/Editor/Launcher to use for filetype based on extension and/or path
This is great. I figured out that multiple filetypes are not separated by ";" but with a space: "*.jpg *.png". The online help is very laconic:

Portable Version
The Portable version is a preconfigured version of Multi Commander that is configured to store all configuration and settings in the same folder that it is run from. Just unpack the portable version and run it MultiCommander.exe.
If you already have MultiCommander installed you can create a portable version by selecting "Install Multi Commaner to USB Device" in the help menu.

Multi Commander 2.1 is now released.
The focus for this release has been bug fixes. But a couple of new features has been added.
Since last version (2.0) over 210+ change has gone into this release.
Some of the new features and fixes are...
Two new languages are supported. Dutch (Created by Hans Niesten) and Czech (Created by PetRip)
Large icon support is now added.
Multi Commander ca now be minimize to the tray and can also be configured to only allow a single instance.
Shared folder overlay icon is now shown even if running on another OS then Windows XP
View filters can now be configured to automatic remember and reset filters.
Quick search can now be configured to allow substring matching.
And a lot of bug fixes and the most common crashes reported by the crash report system has been fixed.
EDIT: I tested the portable version, but files are stored in the user profile folder and in the Windows folder.
Did not test this from a USB device but started the software on my computer's hard drive

I ran MultiCommander x64 Portable V2.1.0 (Build 1030) from a non bootable hard drive and it is perfectly portable. The only thing I noticed outside the application folder was a _mc_ folder in AppData\Local\Temp\

MultiCommander is at v2.1.2 (Build 1045).
14 Minor changes. Only some important fixes for some stability issues.
FIXED - Drag and Drop issue if a single file was moved.
FIXED - Fixed problem when pressing "..." button multiple times.
FIXED - Issue when opening search with custom command.
FIXED - Stack overflow problem if copying the paths of many thousands of file to the clipboard.
FIXED - 2 very rare crash problems

I second Baas here, it's stealth for me, too. Can someone else confirm it? I want to add it to the database but I want to be sure about this point.

I ran Multi Commander v2.1.2 (Build 1045) 32bit on my Win7 x64 machine
Nothing in Regshot, only the empty _mc_ folder in %tmp%
I say add it, there's some robust code going on here!

Internal filetype associations are a bit tricky, especially when coming from Total Commander. Finally I found that this is the right syntax:

"${mcpath}\..\IrfanView\i_view32.exe"
The ">" button enables you to insert the "${mcpath}" variable, but in fact it pastes "${mcinstallpath}", so you have to manually modify it.
Another shortcoming is that it doesn't supports custom "Open with" actions (at least I haven't found a way).
Anyway, it is a very good file manager though I haven't used it for a longer time.
