Access problem

#1 Post by smaragdus »

Today I could not open The Portable Freeware site using my browsers. I could load the site only via TOR, please see screen-shot below:

I wonder what causes this problem- whether my ISP is blocking the Portable Freeware site? Can anyone give me an idea what is going on?

This is the first time I experience that problem. Anyway- my RSS client could load new feeds from The Portable Freeware.

Unknown. My guess is the site was offline and someone on Tor was caching the site to help save bandwidth.

Looks like a DNS problem.

As a first resort, try flushing the DNS cache. You can do so by opening the command prompt and running this command:

Code: Select all

ipconfig /flushdns
If that doesn't help, try switching to another DNS server. Instructions and a list of public DNS servers: http://www.tech-faq.com/public-dns-servers.html. After switching the DNS server, flush the cache before retrying to access TPFC.

Recently I also have similar problems with the site, especially on Fri-Sat-Sun evenings, for about 3-4 weeks. The error message is whether "Service temporarily unavailable" or "Server not found", as above. I will try the DNS cache solution next time.

Last week I got the 503 message as well. But this week I haven't seen anything.

Perhaps it's just Andrew experimenting how to make the site more stealth. So far so good :)

So stealth that no one can access it. Nice!

Next level: so stealth that no one knows it exists.

The site was offline for a short while two weeks back due to server maintenance at the hosting company.

Other than that, I don't know of any other server downtime.
