Would an unofficial IRC channel for TPFC be OK?

The topic title says it all, and the question is mainly for Mr. Andrew Lee.

The truth is I already made such a channel (not very nice of me and I do apologize!) but I won't release any info if it's not OK with Andrew and/or the TPFC community.

I think an IRC channel dedicated to portable stuff related to TPFC is a good idea, but I must be sure. Bare in mind that this is going to be unofficial and the permanent channel topic will state that.

Or (better yet) an official IRC channel will be created?

I am not a big fan of IRC, so it's unlikely an "official" IRC channel will ever be created.

But if you have already created one, maybe you could share it with the rest so that those who are interested can participate.

It seems that channel isn't used anymore. :( I have seen no one there.

I used it daily at first, but then I got tired of chatting with myself... :)
To be fair, Webfork, Computerfreaker, Zach Thibeau and Guinness dropped in from time to time. :)

P.S. I'm online now!
P.S. And so is System!

If the #portablefreeware channel isn't busy, you guys are welcome to pop into our official channel at #portableapps. It's a support and general channel (with a request to keep things a bit quiet when someone is asking for support). We also have #portableapps-ot for off topic stuff with the same group of people and #portableapps-dev where we'll occasionally take in-depth dev discussions if they run on and the main channel is otherwise busy. You can use your favorite IRC client (we've got instructions on using Pidgin Portable, Miranda IM Portable, KVIrc Portable and PChat Portable here: http://portableapps.com/support/chat ) or use our in-browser chat here: http://portableapps.com/support/chat/live

There are always at least a dozen people in there and often well over 20 at peak times.

...finally, I'm commenting on this thread...

Andrew, may you, please, install a Jabber/XMPP server at portablefreeware.com and we all be able to chat at tpfc@conference.portablefreeware.com or tpfc@muc.portablefreeware.com (depends on which server software you're installing, I believe) ?

The IRC channel was cool but didn't see much use. I don't know that an XMPP server would fix that.

Who knows, maybe it will cause to a major change on TPFC?

Edit: What I like with Jabber is that I have a personal account like AIM/ICQ/MSN etc. and I can join to chat rooms like IRC and I believe that this will cause a change (at least, for me)

Plus, Andrew wasn't keen with the IRC Channel being hosted on TPFC so I doubt he will be with this.

In the freenode IRC network, an user can register a nickname and even keep other people from using the same nick. I have done so.

Don't misunderstand -- I'm not against it and I could set that up without much trouble. However, I was in the PFWC IRC channel frequently when it first appeared and, apart from some minor exchanges with a few core users, it didn't do anything. I'd need a pretty clear indication of need or use to get that going.
