Looking for icons

#1 Post by m^(2) »

Hello, I have a problem:
I'm looking for file icons for my file manager. Currently I use system assigned ones, which changes wherever I plug to another computer and, even on my PC, is heterogeneous.
I'm gonna use 16x16 and though bigger sizes won't hurt, they are insignificant. I want them to be as readable as possible to let me recognize file type quickly even when I'm tired. Besides this...well, they can't be really ugly, that's all.

I searched the web and found several sets, namely:

http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/
http://www.iconeasy.com/cat/file-type-icons/
http://plainz.oh.land.to/download_icon.html
http://www.splitbrain.org/projects/file_icons
http://mattahan.deviantart.com/art/G-A-N-T-3035321
http://www.pinvoke.com/

The last one is my favourite now as icons are distinctive and quite rich, but though it has round 1000 icons, a lot of things is missing i.e. there's nothing for pdfs, office files, sources, help is poor...

I have little hope to find a perfect one, but maybe somebody can suggest something more?

:? I'm really NOT sure...

As time passing by... you're starting to realize that this site is pretty amateurish, but it is a good site - http://www.iconfinder.net/ (anyway, have fun with it)
About FAMFAMFAM - check this site: http://codefisher.org/pastel-svg/
Good job!, too bad that the author isn't publishing the code of the SVGs...

Hope that helps ;)

edit: oh, there is a blog (I'll check it out, soon...)

Thanks.
After some considerations I decided that famfamfam and fugue often work well together and combining them might be a good choice. Therefore codefisher icons are very welcome. :)

BTW out of 2000 famfamfam+fugue icons I see use for 68...with some duplicating their functions as I didn't make a decision which ones to choose.

I tried iconfinder already and even though it has a lot of icons, lack of browsing capabilities is a killer, no way to get a full set.

EDIT: I see that you updated your post. It's not spam!
Thanks a lot, you're really helpful. :D

for fugue, you have to attribute or link to the author's site since it's a creative commons license!

i'd rather get full out GPL, public domain icons!

I've used FamFamFam in the past... good icon set... wish there were 256x256 versions though!

No problem since I won't distribute it.:D

Just wow. I regret that there are no 14x14 icons as this size would be perfect.

Thanks for comments.

edit:
Michael Buckley wrote:The SVG images from which the PNGs are created are closed source however they may be requested at a price.
you can buy the SVGs and define the desired size with SVG2PNG.
Michael Buckley wrote:The icons can be downloaded (2.18 MB) as a zip that contains icons in the sizes 16, 24, 32 and 48 or as a larger download (12.26 MB) that contains icons in the sizes 64, 72, 96, 128, 256.

Please do not link directly to the downloads, as these links are likely to change as I update the package.

The other alternative is to use an online search to just find the icons you need.
