Warning about the Simplenote service

#1 Post by webfork »

Disclaimers:
  • This is distinct from the non-portable Simplenote program we've discussed before -- instead, this is the service that underpins the program and a number of related tools.
  • The service is free, excellent, and super easy. It's a great starter note program that I still recommend, but not for intensive, frequent, long-term use.
Problem:

I've seen some recent issues with some important notes getting auto-deleted. This includes a LOT of tools, links, and other functions I had been stacking up to post here on the site, which is a bit painful as I wonder what got lost.

I suspect its because I've been using this for years now and used up my available data / bandwidth / allotment for this program, which I certainly understand. It's a free service, I use it all the time, and I know free services should have a limit. The problem here is there's no notice to let me know I'm approaching my limit, the opportunity to buy a premium service.

Anyway, I'll be switching over to a similar service that does have a premium offer "Standard Notes" https://standardnotes.org both because it talks a bit more about security and also syncronizes with the excellent AlephNote editor. It also has a backup function that I'll definitely be looking into to try and avoid any more lost ideas and info.

---

Some of you may point out that AlephNote may be an issue because 3rd party apps can be part of the problem (example) but in this case I was:

1. Accessing the web interface, no other app open apart from the mobile software
2. Clicking "restore" on files in the deleted folder
3. Having them re-add themselves to the deleted folder

I run the program inside a VeraCrypt volume, but yes: an optional local master password would be ideal.
