Stop the EARN IT Act

#1 Post by webfork »

Our site has generally avoided active political involvement save when it affects freeware as was the case with Net Neutrality. We have another moment currently with a bill in the US would have serious implications to both open source and freeware projects. Many will rightly point out that many projects can be hosted outside US soil and get around many of these restrictions, but could still affect US-based developers and set a precedent for other countries. It could also affect the participation of citizens (including yours truly) in projects that don't follow their guidelines. Most immediate projects affected will include Telegram, Discord, and qTox, who are unlikely to participate and would therefore see either restrictions or outright disconnection.

If you're a US citizen, please reach out to your representative and encourage them to end this effort. EDIT: You can also donate to organizations opposing the legislation (like eff.org and FFtF and sign the petition.
