Freeware Guide is gone(?)

#1 Post by Midas »

Freeware Guide (https://www.freeware-guide.com/) was for years a reputed and valuable resource where a comprehensive and well curated list of free software could be found.

A while ago (last October) I noticed its updates had stopped -- which was odd since FG had been known to me for years because of its constant daily updates. Well, I thought, all good things come to an end, at least the software listings will remain for future reference.

Not so, it seems, as I was checking on it today only to be greeted by the following image-only notice. :frowning:

BTW, Wayback Machine snapshots are at web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.freeware-guide.com/.

The last working one was taken March 12 -- I didn't test any download links, but they should be OK for the time being as they generally pointed back to programs' homepages.

And looks from the archive.org page that it was a 20 year run, too. Sad news, indeed.

@Midas,
I did test the download links. Every date I tried, even the first one (August 2000), and all returned a dead link.

What is even the point of the Wayback Machine if none of them work?

I have browse the domain info trough Whois service https://www.whois.com/whois
You can find info about freeware-guide.com on this page https://www.whois.com/whois/freeware-guide.com
- domain expires on 2021-04-10
- the registration of domain has been updated on 2020-04-28.
so i think that's only a temporary mistake.
