Longest in development

#1 Post by Midas »

webfork noted how long Chasys Draw IES has been in development -- it was first released in 2001 -- which prompted me to recall a few other entries form around the forum. It would be fun to see what others come up with...

From the top of my head, I immediately thought of David Harris Pegasus Mail, for example (see http://www.pmail.com/30years.htm), and only because it was one of the first programs I ever used once I got access to the internet.

Some other notable entries, in no particular order:

- Cathy (https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1716)
- Filezilla (https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=9)
- Notepad++ (https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=539; couldn't find date of 1st release)

XVI32 comes to mind. For years, its latest update was from 2003 and it was thought to be dead... but then it got a 2.52 update in 2011.

It seems to be on hiatus again, no updates since 2012. But it remains a reasonably capable hex editor and I actually have some use for it in my new job.

Recently, another high-profile example was provided when the FLOSS InkScape project finally released v1.0 after 16 years of development -- for further info, check viewtopic.php?p=97032#p97032 ...

Another day, another entry... :slight_smile:

xMarkup (viewtopic.php?t=6738) v1.0.1 was released way back in 1999, according to its homepage (http://xmarkup.sourceforge.net/xm_en.htm#030101). The latest v4.5 release is two months old (https://sourceforge.net/projects/xmarkup/files/).

Honorable mention due for GammaDyne's DocPad (viewtopic.php?t=24350), first released in 2003 (https://www.gammadyne.com/rh10010.htm).
