Well, I have been meaning to post something about this for quite some time without ever taking a step, so I guess the time has come to boldly go where no one else seems to want to thread...

The point is to have somewhere in TPFC forums to dump scattered info relevant to those -- like myself -- who're still clinging to Windows 7 dead shell.

Windows 7 is an operating system that was produced by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. It was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009, and became generally available on October 22, that year [...]. Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015 and extended support ended on January 14, 2020.

And here's a little something to justify opening the topic...

Microsoft may have dropped Windows 7 like a hot stone, but that doesn't mean everyone is. Recognizing the fact that large numbers of people are going to continue using the aged operating system, most antivirus firms are going to continue to offer support. Support from the likes of AVG, Avira, Kaspersky and Trend Micro for at least two years is great news for those concerned about the security of sticking with Windows 7.

i like Win7 and still use it on all my computers

i have several different laptop computers and my intent is to eventually get setup where i use only one for shopping, email, banking etc - and this one i might have to upgrade to Win8. Then i have several others that i just use to browse and harvest data from the internet and these i will continue to use Win7 and just re-install OS image from time to time in case of any malware.

Although I'd like to stick with Win7, I'll will be switching over to Win10 in the next few weeks, at least for my main system. This is in part because I need to move over to 64-bit anyhow as so many projects I care about are 64-bit only. I may try to maintain a hardened Win7 box for PFW testing, but we'll see. I'll also look into some sandbox options.

As it goes forward, I will definitely be posting a lot about Win10 privacy tweaks to help mitigate some of the problems I've already seen in that space.

That's a problem I don't have, since I moved to 64-bit Windows 7 right from the start.

OTOH, I did setup Windows 10 in a couple of systems already and let's just say I was not overly impressed -- quite the contrary, in fact.

This very weekend I heard one of those systems is totally failing to even boot any of the two installed OSes (Windows 10 and Ubuntu Linux) on account of a Windows update breaking it down.

OTOH, the last time I had to install the Windows 7 I'm currently using was way back in January 2015.

Looks like spam if you ask me... if you google phpbb "light-it . net" (additional spaces for paranoia) you will find many phpbb forum post on many sites with links to that site an a ton of useless topics ... either m8's account was compromised or it is the same person joining many fora posting links. I'd delete it.

On the Major Geeks website https://www.majorgeeks.com you can download the Simplix UpdatePack 7 20.5.20 created by the user 'simplix' (a russian user on MDL Forum) which contains all the updates
for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 until date of (20)20 (last two digits of the year 2020) (month) May and (day) 20 (aka 2020.05.20).

How to use UpdatePack7R2 for Windows (from blog)
The system must have at least 10 GB of free space on the hard drive and preferably at least 1 GB of free RAM.

For a flexible set installation, you can use the following keys and their combinations:

• Key /Reboot to automatically reboot if necessary.
• /S switch for a completely silent installation without windows or messages. Register matters.
• Key /Silent for passive installation - progress is visible, but the installation is fully automatic.
• The /IE11 switch to install Internet Explorer 11 and localize it.
• The /Temp = switch allows you to specify a temporary working directory. It does not have to be empty, but it must exist.
• The /NoSpace switch allows you to skip checking the free space on the system partition, it is not recommended to use it.
• The /FixOn switch enables protection from Meltdown and Specter, and / FixOff turns it off. Without keys, protection is disabled for Win7, and enabled for Win2008R2.

The Softpedia Secure Download US link keeps giving me a 404 error. The external link was giving me a 1MB file size. I was able to get it through the Major Geeks site with no issue.

You are right.
I did not put the direct download links.
The external link (author's blog) downloads a downloader of 1 MB size with name UpdatePack7R2+.exe so you can download always last (recent) build.
The best choice is to use the link on MEGA : the name of file downloaded is UpdatePack7R2-20.5.20.exe
