Donations in lieu of payment

#1 Post by thepiney »

In a recent post I mentioned that I work on PCs for family and friends and in lieu of payment I often ask that they donate to an open source and/or free program or project, prefferrably one that was used to fix their system. This got me wondering how many have actually done that and if maybe I should stand over their shoulder while they make a donation (and yell at them when they select $5.00 or less for the amount.)

In doing a little research on this I came across this post at Stack Overflow ---> https://stackoverflow.com/questions/129 ... urce-tools

One of the replies had a link to an interesting blog post ---> Is Money Useless to Open Source Projects? ---> https://blog.codinghorror.com/is-money- ... -projects/

Some other replies suggest donating to smaller projects that may be in more need of the money rather than larger ones such as the Mozilla Foundation, some suggest donating to Wikipedia, TortoiseSVN, and I'm thinking maybe sites like the Internet Archive would make a great suggestion as well.

Some other links I came across on this subject:

https://html.com/blog/open-source-non-profit-charities/

https://opensource.com/life/11/10/shoul ... e-projects

https://www.techrepublic.com/blog/linux ... -giveaway/

https://hub.packtpub.com/economics-open ... donations/ This one even mentions Distrowatch's donations program which I've seen over the years but don't recall seeing in recent Distrowatch Weekly's that I've read.

5 Websites to Find and Download Free and Open Source Software ---> https://itsfoss.com/websites-for-foss/ Kind of surprised and a bit disappointed that I didn't see TPFC on the list.

Any suggestion from you guys on this subject?

We like open source a lot, but the runaway majority of work here is closed freeware.
