Microsoft buying Github

My initial response here is negative. To my knowledge, Github has to this point had a fairly good reputation around selling personal data and makes their money elsewhere. This has a lot to do with their success versus the wide selection of competitors that have come and gone. As the purchase by Microsoft is almost certainly for integration with their Linkedin property, there's little question that this policy will change.

I don't think we need a Facebook for Developers.

The Slashdot story seems to agree, quoting the CEO:
Nadella wrote:The LinkedIn team has grown a fantastic business centered on connecting the world's professionals. Together we can accelerate the growth of LinkedIn, as well as Microsoft Office 365 and Dynamics as we seek to empower every person and organization on the planet.

Microsoft Planning to Buy GitHub

If this is true GitHub is doomed- M$ will ruin it and eventually shut it down just like they did with CodePlex. If M$ acquires GitHub I will most likely delete my account.

From the Hacker News comment thread I was peeking at Github were operating at a loss up till this point, despite having what I thought was a decent business model.

A lot of comments I saw suggested moving to Gitlab but some have said they're less stable financially than Github (haven't looked into this myself fwiw). OTOH one benefit of Gitlab is the entire service is open source, so one could create a Gitlab clone (though obviously how many would successfully try this is anyone's guess).

Here's some mildly positive coverage from the Ubuntu Linux camp:
And some further details:

Good analysis from SiliconAngle including expectations and alternatives:
There is also a strong likelihood that Microsoft, based on its public statements so far, will take the following next steps once it completes its acquisition of GitHub:
  • Move hosting of GitHub from Amazon Web Services to its own Azure cloud computing infrastructure;
  • Position GitHub as a strategic onramp to its Azure public cloud infrastructure;
  • Introduce DevOps tools to accelerate code deployment from GitHub repos to Azure;
  • Provide a transparent handoff for developers navigating between the Visual Studio Code and GitHub experiences;
  • Ramp up marketing of Azure and other Microsoft offerings through GitHub;
  • Rapidly integrate LinkedIn with GitHub in order to grow the Azure developer ecosystem; and
  • Converge GitHub’s Electron cross-platform development framework with Microsoft’s own Blazor open-source technology for progressive Web apps.
Alternatives pointed to: I'm not a dev and definitely not a Git-head so YMMV here...

The world is crazy right now. We have a reality TV star in the White House, and day after day, there are unbelievable things being reported in the news. [...] You know what else is crazy? The Linux Foundation is officially endorsing Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub!

Kind of goes over some familiar territory from what I'm seeing in terms of arguments for the goodness of their acquisition. Microsoft is different, it's all about developers, github needed help, etc. I maintain that there were a lot of options on the table that didn't include purchase by Microsoft or Google, it was just the one with the biggest $.

I will say the line "isn't Microsoft's takeover preferable to the Git repository simply going out of business and disappearing altogether" line is a false dichotomy. The most popular developer hub on the planet certainly had a transformation in it's future, but it wasn't going anywhere.

This is a severe blow to open source community, when the acquisition is completed I have no doubt that M$ will change the ToS and later deteriorate and eventually kill the service as it did with CodePlex, as Goo did with Google Code. SourceForge offers GitHub Importer, at least it hasn't been eee'd (embrace, extend, extinguish) by some of the giant monsters (M$, Goo) that try to ruin the software and the web by monopolizing it. Meanwhile

GitLab Says It Imported 100,000 Repositories After Microsoft’s GitHub Takeover

which means that not everyone is a complete idiot who cannot recognize the wolf in sheep's skin,

but

The Linux Foundation Defends Microsoft After GitHub Acquisition

which shows time and again that all the foundations and non-government organizations are corruption hubs whose only raison d'être is cheating, fooling, manipulating and robbing the masses thus serving to their corporate, globalist masters.

@Special
No, I have not, as far as I know the acquisition is not completed yet.
