Avast antivirus insanity: Asking for help

#1 Post by dmg »

A few days ago Avast antivirus blacklisted my personal website. I contacted both Avast and my webhost to try to fix the issue but neither have responded directly. However, the support ticket I submitted to Avast has been updated to "Solved", even though the problem HAS NOT BEEN FIXED!

I have managed to confirm that the program is not in fact detecting something on my site as a virus, it simply blocks the site entirely based on a list of banned addresses. I have tested my site with Virustotal and they agree that it my site is CLEAN.

I am asking anyone who reads this, and who uses Avast antivirus, to please visit my site and post back here whether or not they were able to reach it. I am trying to determine if this could possible be an issue with my particular copy of Avast, and not a far reaching issue (AKA: has the world gone crazy or is it just me?).

My site is: http://crzyinc.weebly.com/index.html

Thank you for your help.

You report reminds me of a similar recent ordeal TPFC and Andrew went through (http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 12&t=16087). I can access the site alright, but then I'm not using Avast (anymore...).

A while ago I switched to MS Security Essentials and am mostly happy with it -- right now I'm also testing ClamSentinel for less Internet exposed PCs...

Not working for me if Avast is active.

And an interesting article about similar issues last year:

Thanks a lot guys!

I finally had a reply from Avast. They say my entire site is being blocked because of one of my pages. Specifically the online help page for Famulus. They did not say why they have a problem with that page, and the only difference I can figure out between that page and the rest of my site is it was the only page not listed in the navigation menu. I don't know why this would be an issue though. They told me to delete the page and I would not be blocked anymore. I opted to 'un hide' it for now and see if that is enough. I have asked them to explain further but I don't know if they will.

I sent several messages to my webhost telling them what is going on. I found at least one other weebly user having the same problem and I am hoping weebly will want to get involved to fix this.

Thank you all again for your help.

Extremely draconian and their response seem bullyish. We don't like this page so remove it or we will block your site for all our users.

Does Famulus even get flagged as a virus by Avast?

Your website is definitely blocked, first time I've encountered a "malicious url" warning from Avast.

No. As far as I know none of this has anything to do with my software. It is entirely about the website itself. I did think for a minute that my keylogging app might be the problem but I guess not. :?

I had not noticed that Avast had a "Network Shield" before this, so I don't know how long ago they implemented it. This is all probably just the result of a relatively new system that still has a lot of bugs.

I heard back from my webhost (weebly), and they say they know about the problem, that it IS a false positive and that it WILL be fixed but that it may take a week or more. I can feel my stress level reducing as I type. :D

My advice would be to move to another provider.
