There were two comments in particular I found quite useful. I was compiling a list of reasons why portable freeware is great awhile back that the author of the Lifehacker article hit upon many points but ...
Sometimes with updates, certain add-ons/patches/tweaks stop working. If you have a must-have extension that works with Firefox 10, but the developers haven't gotten around to fixing compatibility for 11, but you need 11 for this other really super cool extension
and
I sometimes keep two versions of a portable app on my computer so that I can switch interfaces without re-doing all the preferences. For example, my Foobar2000 is on my computer with the traditional interface and another one that I configured to use the Columns UI interface. I assign them both different icons in order to differentiate them in my start menu.
... both were items I'd never written down.

I actually do something similar with Foobar2000 but didn't think that anyone else would see this as a benefit. Good stuff.
