Re: AppCompactor V1.1

AppCompactor includes 7-Zip and UPX support, which is really all you need (not to mention it's the only legal means of compressing and redistributing apps under GPL licenses). And it's smart about what it compresses and what it doesn't (it automatically skips files smaller than 4K, for example). And...

Re: Upgrade instructions

the proper instructions being "run the exe and point it toward your current installation" That makes sense, yeah. But I'm more interested in describing the internals of the file structure as this might also be used for backup purposes or to reset a program to its defaults. Again, information for th...

Re: Upgrade instructions

That confusion has never happened, nor could it. Install a new copy over the old one means *install* a new copy over the old one. It's a portable installer. It doesn't mean get some extraction utility and extract the files from it and then overwrite them over the old one... which may cause the app n...

Re: kmplayer portable.

It sounds like you just have to provide "clear directions" on where to find the source code, not host it on your servers. And that's only GPLv3. That's not correct. You have to distribute the source yourself according to the Free Software Foundation. Specifically: I downloaded just the binary from ...

Re: kmplayer portable.

JohnTHaller, can you share your thoughts on this: You redistribute some apps which utilize FFmpeg in some way, i.e. Google Chrome Portable SMPlayer Portable VLC Media Player Portable None of which contain the source code to FFmpeg. Are these apps not in violation? We don't redistribute Google Chrom...

Re: kmplayer portable.

I just looked through the 7-zip distribution of VLC direct from the web site. It doesn't seem to have any source code at all. The readme file seems to say there should be an \src directory but it doesn't exist. A quick search seems to say that FFmpeg is in VLC (http://wiki.videolan.org/FFmpeg) and ...

Re: kmplayer portable.

On the KMPlayer's licensing violations, the details are included here: http://roundup.ffmpeg.org/issue820 It appears they are violating multiple things, including compiling two libraries together which actually makes them legally unredistributable. In addition, they are distributing a GPLed/LPGLed b...

Re: kmplayer portable.

That version has legal issues. Actually, all versions of KMPlayer have legal issues. It includes code under the GPL illegally taken from the FFMpeg project as well as others. They stole work from Media Player Classic as well. You'll find them listed in FFMpeg's hall of shame: http://ffmpeg.org/sham...

Re: .NET Applications

As requested, I have updated my .NET inclusion and compatibility matrix to also include information on non-Windows PCs like Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris (but have excluded smart phones and similar from the mix): http://johnhaller.com/jh/useful_stuff/dotnet_portable_apps/ I also added in informati...

Re: .NET Applications

BTW the listing is flawed in that it thinks there are <= 0% Non-Windows PCs. I wonder if the NetApp is too. That's done on purpose, since we're only really concerned with Windows PCs in relation to the portability of .NET. So I adjusted it to exclude Mac, Linux, iPhone, etc. We already know that a ...

Re: Songbird Portable V1.2

It was after I closed the PortableApps launcher. I have to say (as before) the launcher in my opinion works very well :) It's just these small problems that occur with Songbird and Firefox. Firefox Portable and Thunderbird Portable both properly clean up after themselves, including all bits in %APP...

Re: Songbird Portable V1.2

TESTED: Portable (Not Stealth) Saved to HKLM\SOFTWARE\mozilla.org & %TEMP%, plus creates an empty folder in %APPDATA%\Mozilla. Thankfully the launcher does alot of cleaning up! I would say Add It! because Firefox and Thunderbird are developed by Mozilla (+ PortableaApps) and they are both in the da...

I just double-checked this on my clean Windows 2000 VM and no registry keys, files or folders are left behind. So, guinness, I'm still unable to reproduce your issue.

Re: Skype Portable 4.2.0.152 Released

John, does Skype Portable handle upgrades well? I'm concerned b/c Skype Portable is an online installer. Also does this version address the /secondary command line issue - allowing for multiple instances of Skype to be opened? [EDIT] Looks like there's an upgrade routine. Yes, Skype Portable handle...
