Re: Portable devices to fight planed obsolescence

Nice! For laptops though, there's usually quite a bit of life left in "old" business laptops that can be purchased on the cheap from eBay. I bought a Thinkpad T450 for $250 recently and replaced the battery with a brand new genuine extended battery for $120. Also did some tinkering with the storage,...

Re: Crow Translate (online language utility)

Added to the database: https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=3046 I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked, to be honest. The OCR recognized the region I threw at it 100% after I downloaded the required Tesseract OCR model for English. Yes, the speech synthesis requires Internet connection. I...

Re: Iconize - Minimize Apps To The System Tray

Just discovered Iconize is private, so I have upvoted and make it public again: https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1176 Also, I made a local copy of nolajovol's 2.0.0.5 version for download. I am still using Iconize on a daily basis on the latest Windows 10 with no issue at all, and I thi...

Re: Ultimate++ - application development framework

This looks really interesting. If I ever start another GUI project, I will test this out.

Cross-platform UI frameworks are a real drag for simple projects. I guess that's why people are turning to Electron/JS with all its pitfalls.

Re: Avidemux

Strange.. any idea why it's still 2.7.6 on the official website?

http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/download.html

Even the nightlies are only up to 2.7.7.

Re: PSPad [text editor]

I have updated the entry with information about the limitations of the 64-bit version. I have also populated the 64-bit download field with the same URL of the download page: https://www.pspad.com/download.php In general, I prefer to point to the download page instead of the direct download link, es...

For me, I normally go with the author's release date if it is stated on their website.

Re: Hashing use cases (why would I want to hash my files?)

I personally use RapidCRC to prevent bit rot . So I have 2 portable HDDs that I use to backup my file server (parent, grandparent) via robocopy. From time to time (every other backup or so), I create a SFV that contains the hashes of all the files on that HDD. Then occasionally, I use the SFV to ver...

So how does one do this? Like WizTree updated to 3.37 today, how to do go about updating it.
Just click on "Edit entry" link to the left of that entry.

Re: PDF SAM = PDF Split And Merge

I have added PDFsam to the database: https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=3045 I always thought this was in the database, since I have had it in my collection since god-knows-when. I don't use it that often, but it always comes in handy when the need arises. I have almost forgotten it is Java-based ...
