File Extensions

You can make a batch file using a registry tool to make file extensions portable. To simplify, here are 2 batch files using regxx (a console registry editor that does not pop up onto the screen) makeEXT.bat @echo off regxx add "HKCR\.xyz\Shell\open\command" "" "\Programs\yourapp.exe %1" RemoveExt.ba...

I love it. I struggled a bit with MP3TagTools, for its lack of being intuitive, and the ease of making mistakes. This one feels much better. I won't add it to my USB, as it is a sit-down-and-work type thing, so will keep a copy at each of my two computers, but Wow. Good find.

Portable bookmarks

May I recommend TrayURL which I learned about on this site? (http://portablefreeware.com/?id=1189). It is a single .exe and .ini file, and while you have to specify which vrowser you want to use it with, you can change it in a few seconds by clicking on the Options menu item. You can also have multi...

I found a workaround. I keep pstart.xml for my USB-only commands, that don't need changing from computer to computer. I create a %COMPUTERNAME%.xml file for each of my computers, containing computer-specific specs. I choose a different colour icon for each I wrote a 2-line batch file auto.bat PStart...

As a normal or better PC User my biggest issue is time, and time to learn the intricacies of anything new, even if in the long run it will save me time, effort, etc. So I have a bunch of command line tools from the 80's that I still use, and which I consider portable, even though they don't and shou...

Wow! I can hardly wait to play with this. Up til now, I was manually creating the reg files, but the undo/redo .reg and .inf files, as well as permanent inclusions/exclusions is great. One of the great things about Regshot 1.8.2 is its simplicity. The downside is that you have to type in the inclusi...

If you don't need graphics, MemPad (http://portablefreeware.com/?id=889) is a great option. It is a freeform tree database, one exe and one .ini for portability, and 120K for the exe. Make a node called 2008 (or whatever the current calendar year is), and {F6} creates/goes to a node for the date. On...

The Viewer for MS Outlook Messages (http://www.scalabium.com/msg) allow to read/convert the msg-files and can be run without any install. Except that it is a limited-feature trial, so is payware, not freeware. I tried the Universal Viewer with plug-in with a 50% success rate. While I like the ones ...

What I use is not a msg viewer, per se, but an Outlook message exporter, exporting to text. PMSEU (Personal Message Store Export Utility) exports Outlook messages very quickly. Install: Extract all files to a directory and run PMSEU.exe Requires: VB6 runtime dll Is portatable, according to Depends.e...

Windows Resizer

Resizes any Window on the desktop. Best one I've seen yet. Tested with Regshot and no settings anywhere, either in registry, Windows directory, nor app directory. Single .exe file. Unzip into directory of choice, and double-click to run Only downside: German only. However, the buttons are logically ...

Many dlls operate that way. You register or unregister them from the system they are on. Pritner drivers are kind of like that (print to Pdf for example) I think traditionally they are NOT treated as portable, as ther are SOO many apps out there where you register the dlls. I personally would consid...

I so wanted this one to be portable, because it does do what others don't. As well as AlephX's and others' comments, I wonder about the nConvertTines in the WinEn registry key. Does something happen after you convert x documents? I'm keeping it because it does what other freeware doesn't, and in my ...

Re: Portable PDF creator

I need an application that can select a XLS or DOC and convert it to PDF. Because I don't have administrator previligies on my PC, at work, I can't install a printer PDF drive..... Would an online converter work for you. This one converts and sends the result to your e-mail address. PDFOnline (http...
